Tayyabs Review

Tayyabs is featured in these Guides:

It’s a Tuesday night, 7pm, and already a snaking queue has formed down the murky Whitechapel street. A hubbub of hungry chattering revellers clutching bottles of wine are eager to get into the newly refurnished Tayyabs restaurant and enjoy some spice.

If you try to get in on a Friday, well, there is one shocking rumour of a man who waited two hours to even get in the door. That urban myth, and the fact that the overwhelming majority of happy eaters are Pakistani surely signals good food?

A more accurate description would be delicious, amazing, the best Asian food in London. Opened in 1974, this 100% Pakistani Halal restaurant has still got customers and staff that have been faithful from its day of birth.

When you finally get a table, there are fresh (and free) popadums and salads to reward your patience. Don’t fill up though because the starters are one of the best parts. The spicy marinated lamb chops and seekh kebabs are essential eating and at £2 a dish, get both. Vegetarian? Try the pakora or Shomi kebabs.

The Main courses are Korai, Saag and Bindhi dishes (all under £5 unless you opt for king prawn). Not the most bountiful selection but it’s quality over quantity and all are served authentically sizzling in a Pakistani clay pot. The menu has virtually unchanged since its 70’s birth, even the two different specials offered depending on which night you’re in there remains the same.

The bill is just as refreshingly good as the food itself, for two people expect to pay about £14. It’s BYO for alcohol (no corkage charge), which has caused some resentment in the Muslim community as it’s a 100% Halal restaurant and some feel it has sold out under Western pressures.

The only real downer is the queue of hungry people. Not so much when you’re waiting in it but when you’re sitting down and you are being glared at by the curry expecting crowds. The stressed waiters are impeccably polite but also clearly anxious for you to eat quickly and get out so they can seat the rest of their loyal fan base.

Final words - Excellent food, value for money and atmosphere; just beware the dreaded queue.

“Many people believe Tayyabs is the best Pakistani restaurant in London. I think it's definitely up there, but not possibly the best. It's certainly popular. We reserved a table for 12 on a Tuesday night and we still had to wait in line for half an hour. It's insanely busy in there. The service is great though and the lamb chops are legendary (my main reason for going really). But I did find some of the food a tad greasy and I couldn't help thinking that there must be better curry restaurants in London. I might stick with Tooting next time.”

“I took my wife and daughter to celebrate our 26yrs of marriage. Wife is vegetarian. The food was excellent and I just could not let go of the lamb chops starter. It was finger licking good. The king Prawn Karahi was also brilliant. For dessert the rasmalai was lovely and we could not stop talking about this find on the way home. Notified work mates and we plan to all visit very soon. The food is spicy but not too hot chilli wise but you should not go for a late meal as the spices need time to settle before sleeping on a full stomach. It is vital to book your table at least a week in advance or you will be queuing for at least half an hour. The service is prompt and polite and the food comes to you very quickly. The place is very popular and the atmosphere is buzzing and loud as all around you people are simply enjoying the food and chatting. No alcohol is sold but you can bring your own, no charge. Might struggle to find a parking place if you come at peak times like Friday or sat.”

"Very rude management. Asked to leave the table when there were no queues. Then the manager was very arrogant and told us that if we wanted to leave a negative review we could do so. Poor customer service..." Which venue is this?
