Prospect of Whitby Description
Prospect of Whitby is featured in these Guides:
The Prospect of Whitby is London's oldest riverside pub dating back to 1520. The original flagstone floor survives and the pub also has a rare pewter-topped bar as well as old barrels and ships masts built into the structure. Most areas of the pub have spectacular views over the River Thames, including the beer garden and first floor balcony and terrace. The pub was originally frequented by those involved in life on the river and sea and it was a notorious haunt for smugglers, thieves and pirates. Other notable customers have been Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys, Judge Jeffries and artists Whistler
In more recent history the Prospect was a favourite during the 1960's with celebrities and royalty including Kirk Douglas, Paul Newman, Glenn Ford, Rod Steiger, Princess Margaret and Prince Rainier.
As a Taylor Walker pub, we are proud to offer freshly prepared British pub food and high quality drinks. With experienced and friendly staff, whether you are a cask ale fan, love a chilled glass of white wine or a freshly ground cup of coffee, we will serve you in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Join us for a classic British dish such as hand battered cod, chips and mushy or garden peas, a juicy rump steak burger and chips or a roast of the day seven days a week. Our pub food is freshly prepared and includes all your favourites. We also offer a range of sandwiches and jacket potatoes, all served by our welcoming and friendly team.
Our upstairs bar is an ideal location for any special event and can be booked by telephone or in person. The room seats twenty-five comfortably and has its own bar. If you have any queries or would like to make a booking do not hesitate to contact us.

“I do not want to write a bad review but i am afraid i must.We where looking forward to a nice Easter Sunday meal and i got a dry cottage pie, it looked like baby food my daughter had a burger and chips which did not look fresh.we think the 3 meals we had in all looked like they where heated in the microwave so not freshly prepared as advertised.we did not complain while we where there as the bar staff did not understand what i was ordering half the time and i am from London. We changed to a bigger table and there was plates left from a family who had just finished their lunch i asked the bar man if he could get someone to clear the table which he said he would but i am sorry to say he did not.We had to ask another memeber of staff. The Prospect of Whitby is such a lovely pub but i am afraid your staff and food are letting you down and it ruined our day.We had such high hopes of a lovely day and we walked away very disappointed.”
