CAU Review

Top 10 things you need to know about Cau restaurant:

1) If you’ve ever fancied one of those succulent Argentinean steaks at Gaucho, minus the sleek dark nightclub-cool interiors and straight-from-the-boardroom exclusivity, Cau is it’s younger, more inclusive sister who probably studied Art at school instead of Finance.

2) There’s no reduction in the theatrics, though; the setting is just as dramatic: St Katharine Docks, looking out over super yachts bobbing on rippling waters, unfortunate neighbours (Café Rouge, Strada, Slug & Lettuce) just out of eyeshot.

3) It’s all pretty trippy, man. Think Milla “multipass” Jovovich from The Fifth Element, only in bovine form. If futuristic, space-age, cowshed decor floats your multi-million-pound boat, then the plastic swivel chairs, corrugated walls, faux grass ceiling, and clouds above the bar transport you to an unrecognisable Argentina.

4) Be smart, book a window seat so as to admire floor-to-sky views of the marina. And if possible, ask for the tattooed pixie, Feeroza, to be your server. She’s precise with her recommendations and will ease you through this magnificently meat journey.

5) If you can’t decide between the number of Malbec wines available (when in Buenos Aires…), ask for a little taster of your short-shortlist – such as the easier drinking Patagonian Piche, or the punchy, squishy-fruited Zuccardi Animado from Mendoza.

6) Ignore most of the casual dining options on the frankly oversized and annoyingly mass-produced menu (no room for seasonal manoeuvring?). There’s only one reason you came: Specialty Cuts. If it sounds exotic, it is.

7) The huge spiral cut Tira de Ancho (Spanish for “greedy guts”) with chimmichurri sauce is the steak to produce those meat sweats you yearn for. Order below your usual cooking preference to ensure pillow-soft texture.

8) Starters are unnecessary, but if you must, the belly of pork tempura is compellingly shareable. I said SHAREABLE!

9) A cheaper, less food coma-inducing option is the Tapa de Cuadril. This Brazilian format is the bacon of the beef world; one for fat lovers, like me.

10) This is a place of sanctitude, where families exhausted by Tower of London Beefeater selfies can exist side by side yet totally disconnected from one other for a few precious minutes; kids, silenced by pre-loaded gaming iPhones kindly provided by the restaurant.
