The Colonies Review

A mashing little pub.

I have no idea where the Queen goes when she wants to rediscover a bit of London Pride.

However, she could do worse than to pop down to this little pub which is a mere minute from her doorstep.

Look, there isn’t anything over the top special about this boozer it’s got regulation ‘normal pub’ décor, oh you now what I mean, slightly chintzy interior, dark varnished wood furniture and a bar with brass fittings. But it’s nice and so cozy.

On tap there are real ales including two guest bitters, London Pride and Youngs. Prices are gentlemanly (as are the staff) with a pint of Fosters coming in at £2.56 and the bangers n mash are the stuff of pub lunch dreams.

At lunch half the bar is taken up with and assortment of sausages (like Somerset, Cumberland, Chilli, Stilton) and £5.25 buys you a choice of three bangers with a healthy (incidentally, that’s ‘big’ healthy not “you’ll get a taut bottom” healthy) portion of creamy mash.

The crowd are mostly suited and booted but cmon this is Victoria not trendy Hoxton. During weekdays at lunch, you’re more than likely gonna have to wrestle with the businessmen and their laptop bags for a seat (or play dirty and get rid of them by spilling gravy on their T. M. Lewins) though evenings and weekends are quieter.

Fabulous sausages n mash, proper ales and sane prices The Colonies is simply lovely and though Lizzie might never visit, it suits me down to a (royal) T. more

“Generally good and recently refurbished. However for the past month the place has consistently stank of sick or something very wrong!”
