The George Review

A George-ous drinking hole.

The George is one of the oldest pubs on The Strand, hence the beams on the ceiling aren’t ‘mock’ Tudor. In fact there’s very little to mock about this neat, unpretentious pub.

Nice original features like stained glass windows and beams mix with quirky lampshades made from antlers (they were oddly cool). Brownie points go out for the superb seating which is provided by comfy booths in red and green leather, and well-spaced tables.

Despite it being 8 o’clock on a Friday, we got ourselves a place on the red banquettes and a bite to eat with very little stress. That’s not to say it was dead, in fact it was busy yet everyone got a seat. How many drinking holes in Covent Garden can you say that about at peak time on a Friday?

The menu boasts hearty, no messing pub favourites which come in standard size and greedier large portions. That much loved fish and chips (standard £6.95, large £9.95) came with a lovely crisp batter though the chips were a tad soggy. Bangers and mash really hit the spot, creamy mash came with a choice of sausages (including a vegetarian option) and some superb lick-the-bottom-of-the-plate gravy. There are also lighter bites if you’re not as greedy as me.

As for drinkies, I definitely recommend the house red wine. A lovely, easy drinking Merlot from Hardy’s comes in at a reasonable £3.40 for a large glass (another anomaly for this part of town).

For a more secretive rendezvous have a wander upstairs, which has been transformed by a recent refurb (Dec 2004) into a lovely space to lounge in what with its sofas and calmer vibe.

There may not be anything trendy about The George, they may have TVs but no Sky and it might be a few minutes walk from Covent Garden, but that’s also their real advantage. They don’t suffer meat-market appeal as the nearby Walkabout do, they don’t get too overcrowded (as the neighbouring Milfords can) and they are just a (long) stones throw away from Covent Garden.

So mock it not.
