The Chandos Review

Many would shy away from creating a hybridisation (dare we say bastardisation) of old man's drinking hole and ageing first class rail rolling stock - not the Chandos. Drinking apartheid is effectively achieved through the division of the bar into equal halves - bar on left booths on right.

Confusing drinkers is of paramount importance for the Chandos and is easily achieved via the serving of beers not found in anywhere else in London if not the world.

Top tip: if you want a lager ask for Aylingerbrau's Prinz - anything that mentions the 'foothills of the Bavarian Alps' on the pump has to be a good bet. (Did someone say 'Oktoberfest'?)

Our Yorkshire-born-lassie-mate thinks that we should mention that this pub stocks an extensive range of traditional ales from Samuel Smith's - Yorkshire's oldest family brewery. These include a surprisingly pleasant organic lager. *Yawn*

It’s big. It serves weird beer. It has clean toilets.

“This summer I have spent many a weekend driving round SE England in search of the perfect ploughman's lunch. Being frank I've been disappointed with every offering delivered up from the country pub kitchens visited thus far. So imagine my surprise when, just minutes from where I work in central London, the most awesome example of this dining delight arrived at my table. The Chandos' ploughman's rocks for being just £5.50, coming with a mountain of cheese and pickle, fresh warm bread, an healthy side salad, an apple and perhaps the world's largest pickle onion. Hats off to all those involved! This venue is now officially my new home from home! For the record my partners cheese and basil baguette with chips was superb - as too were all the dishes around us that were being eagerly devoured. The Chandos was until recently a dark and smokey affair - now it is a fine alternative to the overpriced sandwich shops and dirty fast food joints.”

“The Chandos is a great boozer. If only other pubs in London would have the same prices! Good selection of Samuel Smiths on tap. Recommended.”

“Grrr.... to the luddite reviews. The Chandos is, quite simply, a great pub. It's cheap, in an incredible location (which makes the price all the more impressive) and the beer is nice. I guess if I try hard, I have three complaints: one is that I once had watery salsa with my nachos (which the staff replaced for me) and two is that it's a victim of its own success - it can get pretty busy in there the choice of spirits is very limited (Also, I don't understand quite how Harry can give it 1 out of 5 for value for money. It's £1.70 for a pint. In the West End. How effing cheap does it need to be? Sam Smith pubs are always excellent (check out the labyrinthine Old Cheshire Cheese down by St Pauls). When Britain goes non-smoking, my liver's gonna get even more of a hammering....”

“OK, the Chandos is not the liveliest pub in London, but hey, take some mates. If you know Sam Smiths pubs, I don’t need to tell you, they all have the same basic layout…. Low tech downstairs/bar, posh (relatively speaking) upstairs/saloon for food. And the best bit…. Good food, cheap beer and with stout just over a couple of quid a pint, you can’t go wrong.”

“If you are a tourist walking between Leicester Square and Covent Garden then by all means stop. If you are anyone else, then really don't bother. This pub is drab and lacking in any kind of atmosphere.”

“The official Fluid review must be the cruellest I've seen on the system yet. The beers are not "werid" - they're the standard range offered by the Samuel Smith's chain, of which there are many in London. Okay, so the beer isn't fantastic, but it's far better than the miserable and watery international brand lagers that most of the bars in London sell. Although an organic beer may generate a yawn from the fluid reviewer, this pretty much establishes his/her lack of credibility as a reviewer - if flavour and quality is to generate such an apathetic response, what is the reviewer there to look at? An unbiased review would go like this: The Chandos is a relatively quiet bar in the centre of London where you can sit at tables or on big leather sofas, drink relatively cheap and nice beer, and chat with you friends. What's so wrong or weird about that?”

"My Gulascheintopf war perfekt and so was the Weissbier. I was in Kingston Steins. I do have a few suggestions for decor and table. 1. you need a little jar of toothpicks on the table to get meat out from..." Which venue is this?
