Suda Review

Book a table at Suda

Top 10 things to know about Suda Thai café and restaurant:

1) Smug friends. We all have them in our social circles. Sometimes they’re an evil necessity. In my case, I had to invite one along to visit Suda. He’s lived in Thailand for 3 years and is about to move there again soon. Not that I am jealous. We have great Thai food here in London and who wants to hide under SPF80 every day?

2) Where would I prefer to be? Bangkok – humidity, pollution and military juntas, or St Martin’s Court, Covent Garden – relaxation, cleanliness, luxury and choices.

3) Why endure a 12-hour flight to Thailand, when you have the authentic deal right in the West End? Suda is owned by Khun Patara Sila-On, Thai restaurateur, chef and TV cook; she’s the Delia Smith of the Thai culinary world.

4) Luckily for me, my guest of honour hadn't dined at the palace of the Thai King yet; so he was rather approving of the selection at Suda, picking out unusual selections like pandan seabass and sticky rice dessert with bitter chocolate filling.

5) Here in the UK, we criminally overcook our fish. Suda, however, does not. Whether it was baked in pandan leaves or the sea bass was fried crispy with chilli sauce, the fish was always light and fluffy.

6) The master of Thai culture sat across the table from me banned any ordering of Thai wines, “They are mostly undrinkable,” he proclaimed; so we opted for a safe Chilean Pinot Noir instead.

7) Their cocktails and juices are definitely worth trying. After all, Thailand is a fruit haven. Lychee, rambutan, dragonfruit, mango, guava; you name it, they probably have it.

8) Best way to deal with self-congratulatory friends? Go for a super-fast pre-theatre menu, so the length of torture is minimal. Here it’s only £14.95 for 3 courses and you even get a selection of tasty starters.

9) The décor in Suda is curiously enticing with sacks of rice wallpaper and wooden beams supporting the ceiling. I almost expected a comment along the lines of “I worked on one of those Thailand paddy fields in my gap year”.

10) Final verdict from Mr Know-it-all? Genuine, authentic, with creative individual touches. The alternative would have been an enforced culinary ride through 100 Bangkok restaurants that offer ‘better’ cuisine. Thankfully, the Thai Gods were smiling on me that evening.

Customer Reviews for Suda

Average (based on 1 votes): 1 Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

The following customer reviews are not endorsed by Fluid London and are simply those of users who wish to publish their independent experiences of Suda.

“The value for money is superb at this new Thai restaurant. Considering this is the West End and that the restaurant is surrounded by expensive clothes shops, it's easy to have a filling meal for less than a tenner before popping back out into the the throng outside. I tried the tofu for a change and was pleasantly surprised.”

Loved

"Very rude management. Asked to leave the table when there were no queues. Then the manager was very arrogant and told us that if we wanted to leave a negative review we could do so. Poor customer service..." Which venue is this?
