Machiya Bar and Restaurant Description

Top 10 things to know about Machiya Bar's Omakase experience:

(1) "London's best-kept secret..."; it's a term we hear thrown around, but take it from us, this secret bar hidden under this seemingly ordinary Japanese restaurant, a mere 5 minutes' walk from the dazzling lights of Piccadilly Circus, could legit be London's best ever kept secret. Hear me out.

(2) Step into the lively ramen restaurant, inform your energetic and kindly waitress that you're here for the bar and prepare to leave the outside world behind as you're lead down the stairs and, instead of a basement, greeted by an intimate

and chic bar with speakeasy vibes. Where did this come from!?

(3) It may not be the biggest bar, but that's OK with me. As I sunk into my comfy leather couch and waited for my partner in crime to arrive, I fell in love with the chic decor. Think exposed lightbulbs, lighting ornaments, and symmetrical hexagonal-shaped marble tabletops. The low-lit setting is perfect for a little tete-a-tete. Thankfully, unlike the restaurant upstairs, you can book yourself a space here.

(4) Want to know what makes this bar different from any other bar you'll ever visit in London? It's London's only cocktail bar offering an "Omakase" cocktail experience, as far as I know. Omakase means "up to the chef" in Japanese. You'll get a welcome drink to kickstart the evening, followed by three cocktails that you, and only you, will ever drink. While there is a menu with all your favourites and the classics, if you want the full experience, Omakase is where it's at.

(5) We can't recommend any drinks when everything is made bespoke to you. It's up to your expert mixologists, and I couldn't be more impressed by his friendly disposition, how he visits your table to ask you to describe the cocktail you'd like, and the beautifully presented drinks he concocts on the spot. Want something sweet? You got it. Fancy something fiery? Sure thing. Nothing is too hard to make. A sign of a true expert cocktail grandmaster.

(6) Want to really test the limit of your mixologist's imagination while partaking in a bit of fun? Ask for a cocktail based on your personality! Are you fun and quirky? Serious and sweet? Relay all this and wait in excited anticipation for what the bar is going to delight you with.

(7) Usually, it's the drinks that really set a bar from any other. However, we were also pleased and surprised by how good the food was. The chicken karaage was chunky, crispy, juicy golden nuggets of deep-fried goodness; the wafu fries were thick-cut, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, nicely dusted with aonori seaweed seasoning; and the Padron peppers were smoky and sweet. We can't imagine a better bar snack for cocktails; well worth ordering with your libations.

(8) If you're flying solo, sit at the bar counter. Even if you're on your alone, you're never truly alone, as you'll come to know the wonderful friendly staff, who enjoy a chat. Jun, your personal Bartender, and Domenica, were wonderful hosts.

(9) If someone was to challenge you to imagine a pad belonging to a cool, sophisticated Londoner with good taste, this secret bar at Machiya is what it would look like. You can really feel at home here. Machiya is a super-secret bar that only cool Londoners like you and I know about. Bring your mates, they will be mightily impressed and bow to your impressive knowledge of all the cool places in London. Machiya Bar for the adventurous Londoners out there looking for a fun and quirky night out.

(10) Machiya is a bit like visiting the tailors. Everything feels bespoke to you. No one will ever sip the same cocktail you had if you go for the Omakase experience. The experience is shaped around treating yourself once in a while, where everything is shaped for you, and you'll be sad to go when you realise how much time had passed.
