Lulivo Review

Best for: fish and white wine.

Great: after or pre-theatre dinner in London’s West End.

I’ve just finished singing loudly and dancing to the rhythm of “We Will Rock You”. Musical theatre is as good as it gets in this stunning city.

The West End is frolicking and I find myself wandering the streets of Elisa Doolittle: “Wouldn’t it be loverly” if I found a great restaurant to end my night in style. Much more though than “a room somewhere”, and surely “with one enormous chair”.

It’s raining, but the beautiful landmarks I walk passed are making the annoying little drops more bearable. I could almost “be singing in the rain”.

Leicester Square is full of tourists and nightlife; I wonder what they’ve all been doing? Maybe, like me, they’ve been to the theatre to see the lions of the Savannah; to stomp to the sound of drums; to get sentimental watching a phantom in love! London is my stage tonight and it is filled with a million different lives.

Here, next to the National Portrait Gallery, is the type of scene I am looking to enter: an Italian restaurant in the centre of London. In keeping with my theatrical night out, I can peer across the road at the Wyndham Theatre.

The waiters outside the door call to me, luring me in with the promise of great food and warmth. I advance.

They move like dancers on stage. They appear and disappear gracefully and elegantly. They seem to read my mind, wanting to satisfy all my desires. They guide me to the table, organise my cutlery and offer napkins whilst pirouetting.

From my table I peep outside at Irving Street. The people passing by will be our audience, I whisper to myself.

Our scenery is that of a cosy interior: brown and beige colours, loads of candlelight, a bar and an open view kitchen counter to admire the chef’s magic. The interior has a bit of the ‘Roman Villa by the Amalfi coast’ touch: statues, plants and chandeliers. There’s also a big mirror to represent the luxuriousness that will take the role of the soundtrack in our play.

The play’s setting: night time in the city! This is a tale of friendship and happiness, blessed by boundless banqueting; a story about precious company and wonderful food, before a wild night spent in the West End.

The main cast of the play: the elegant waiters; the welcoming restaurant manager; myself as the foreigner; my astonished and grateful guest; and the food as the main protagonist.

The chorus is that of my fellow diners. They are there to represent all walks of life: an adoring, dating couple; two people talking about their cinema experience; a family of Spanish tourists resting from a day of wandering with their London A-Z.

Food glorious food. The menu is full of Italian delicatessen and the spotlight is on the fish courses: gamberoni, calamari, sea bass and sole. I hear the audience gasp, as though they know how delicious, fresh, and inviting the fish looks and tastes.

My character is thirsty and the script states that “after a long time spent dwelling on the huge wine list she orders the Pinot Grigio, to be followed by an Orvieto Classico”.

This is the moment where the cast ensemble sings the main chorus of the play: “The belly is full and the mood is blissful; so pleasant, so well presented, so well served!”

In full Italian style, the finale is epic and dramatic: make room for the dessert Torta della Nonna, the noble and magnificent complement to a grand night!

It is brilliant. The performance has been magnificent. A standing ovation was always on the cards.

Final scene: I walk along the South Bank towards the Globe theatre. “Good Night, Good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be tomorrow”.

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
