Lotus Review

Book a table at Lotus

Lotus is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things you need to know about Lotus restaurant:

1) Despite the slightly garish-yellow “Indian Cuisine” sign outside this restaurant, you are far, far away from Brick Lane. Lotus brings a fine-dining slant to Indian food in London. Plus, their resident sommelier, Debbie, has put a great amount of thought into the wines.

2) When presented with a menu from an Indian restaurant, do you find yourself tossing it to one side and ordering your firm favourites from rote? If so, you’ll need to change your approach for Lotus.

3) Like the chefs, the menu-choices have been carefully selected from across India. Many use local ingredients too. If you leave your food (and wine) choices up to your waiter, you won’t be disappointed. But you might be surprised, for example:

4) Pigeon actually tastes good.

5) The lamb chops and rump kebab are an absolute culinary delight and you will find they genuinely offer some of the tenderest meat imaginable. The accompanying Heritage Reserve Zinfandel is an excellent choice too.

6) Are you supposed to eat the whole pieces of garlic in the “secret” pickle? Who knows, but they sure do satisfy.

7) That said, high quality comes at a price. You won’t be haggling the price of your dinner down to a tenner as you might along the aforementioned Brick Lane.

8) The waiting staff are passionate about Lotus and its menu, and this adds genuine charm to the service delivery. They were almost bubbling with excitement about the new Winter Menu and accompanying “native grape” wines – if you can’t make it to Lotus before November, that might not be a bad thing.

9) As you enjoy your food, take a second to look around: the décor, waiting staff, cutlery, table decorations. Everything has been chosen by the Chef and Manager, Bhaskar Banerjee, and is most easily described as cohesive – even his business card matches.

10) While Lotus is appointed an unusual (for an Indian restaurant), subdued shade of grey, when accompanied by the attentive but relaxed staff the culmination is a welcome, relaxed and unobtrusive bolt-hole from the hustle-and-bustle of the nearby Trafalgar Square.
