Homage Grand Salon Review

Book a table at Homage Grand Salon

Best for: Dinners where you can pretend to be a media lawyer or work in banking, and earn the equivalent salary while spending under £30 on the 3-course set menu.

Great: Sumptuous main courses (milk-fed lamb, lobster thermidor, veal medallion, angus beef fillet steak etc.)

‘If only I could turn back time, if only I could turn back time.’ Remember that ‘serious’ song from the band that did Barbie Girl? It cunningly matched the theme of the film it featured in to a tee: Sliding Doors. I‘m no GP (Gwyneth Paltrow or general practitioner) but I think the song and film’s premise are an apt way of illustrating my experience at Homage Grand Salon Restaurant in Covent Garden.

Grand in every sense of the word, the Waldorf Hotel’s restaurant is suitably salubrious: there are the obligatory crystal chandeliers and candelabras on the restaurant’s central circular bar. The wooden floors glisten with polish, the white tablecloths are sturdy enough to not even need a table beneath them, and white Ionic pillars seem to go on and on before reaching the ceiling with a flourish of golden swirls. But is the restaurant just a bit too grand for some visitors?

HOMAGE VERSION ONE
Nathalie 1 (N1) spies the elegant room from the reception desk where she and friend Sarah 1 (S1) wait while staff try to locate their booking. A computer hiccup means their names aren’t on the list and they await their dinner fate anxiously. The waiter brings over water and set menus.

HOMAGE VERSION TWO
Now imagine the alternate N2 and S2 walking into the restaurant. (If it helps, they have short hair, a la happy Paltrow.) After a momentary IT glitch, N2 and S2 are led to their table. As N2 sinks into the black velvet banquette she feels all her stresses and troubles drift away. The waiter brings over her menu and a £14 glass of Champagne. S2 is equally tranquil and takes a rye roll from the bread basket offered by her polite waiter. They chink glasses and toast to a relaxing evening.

HOMAGE VERSION ONE
The set menu is a good price (£21.50 for three courses before 7pm) and would no doubt offer a great pre-theatre quick bite (post-theatre offers are available too). N1 and S1 are not going to the theatre, however, and are a little underwhelmed with what’s on offer: unless they want to pay another £9.50 for something from the grill, chicken, fish, pork chop or veggie tart are the only choices for the main course and it all sounds a bit average.

HOMAGE VERSION TWO
What to eat? The a la carte menu has a good selection of dishes without being unwieldy. White asparagus and tomato salad with hollandaise sauce and poached egg, and a plate of Iberian Jabugo ham served with grated tomato and olive tapenade don’t disappoint. And so they shouldn’t. A plate of ham costs £22.

HOMAGE VERSION ONE
N1 notices someone who looks a lot like her sitting the other side of the restaurant except she has short hair. N1 makes a mental note to never go that short, it will do nothing for her face shape. She also sees what looks like a leg of ham by the central bar. Displayed in a glass case, perhaps it’s a Damien Hirst foray into meat curing. Would be nice to eat some ham but alas it’s not on the menu.

HOMAGE VERSION TWO
N2 sees someone staring at her. The spy looks remarkably like herself, except with long, knotty hair. No doubt she’s jealous of N2’s chic haircut and will be describing it to her hairdresser at a later date. With the plate of ham polished of, it’s time for mains. S2 is disconcerted to discover that veal sweetbreads are nothing remotely to do with carbohydrates. N2’s lamb on broad beans and shallots confit is incredibly rich and all the more delicious for it.

HOMAGE VERSION ONE
Hurrah! The booking confusion has been rectified. N1 and S1’s set menus are whipped away and replaced with a la carte alternatives before they can say ‘waiter, please’. Just as Gwynnie gets John Hamm at the end of Sliding Doors, N1 and S1 get their ham also; a nice big plate of it. (This inferior version of Sliding Doors has gone on long enough.) By the time they finish their sumptuous desserts – Valrhona chocolate mousse with a bitter orange jelly centre: a pimped up jaffa cake – all is forgiven.

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
