Yoshiaki Review

Book a table at Yoshiaki

Best for: adventurous food; Piccadilly dining; swag with substance.

Great: tasting menu; cocktails; all-round experience.

If I were to tell you about my evening at Piccadilly restaurant, DSTRKT Restaurant & Bar, I’d tell you I discovered that no matter who you are or what you do, you must go.

If I were a horticulturist I’d appreciate the fauna delicately decorating the experimental cocktails. I’d nod in approval as my girlishly pink gin-based raspberry and elderflower Collins, muddled with lime, ginger and fresh raspberries, slowly disappeared from its glassy prison.

If I were an important London business type, I’d give a wide berth to the over-populated, over-priced and underwhelming tourist traps filling Piccadilly, instead rewarding myself for the ‘business’ I’d done that day with a fauna-favoured cocktail at the ultra-cool, ultra-relaxed bar. Leather seats would make close friends with my bottom, and dimmed lighting would soothe my computer-strained eyes.

If I were an interior designer I’d squint past the suits reclining in relative darkness to take inspiration from the restaurant’s handsome façade. I’d coin the phrase ‘maximum-minimalism’: a simple black and brown colour pallet injected with interest via texture and material. Glass chairs; high-shine black tables; mustard booths; and a central lighting display hovering over the restaurant’s main seating area like a cluster of suspended pink jellyfish, soft, translucent, glowing.

If I were trying to impress a date I’d forget flowers and chocolates. Instead, I’d seat my date below the floating jellyfish, say little and let the sophisticated vibes do the talking. I am someone ‘in the know’; I am dining somewhere interesting, therefore I am interesting.

If I were a celebrity I’d be concerned with ensuring the public thought of me as interesting and ‘in the know’. I’d nod in strained upward-lipped fakery to Gwyneth Paltrow and Rihanna, Stella McCartney and Jay-Z - who’ve all been - and secretly text my press rep to tip the paparazzi off to my own whereabouts, hoping to be papped under DSTRKT’s stylish entrance.

If I were nosy I’d turn my attention to the chefs working hard in the open-fronted kitchen, creating culinary magic and bringing some fame and recognition not to those who eat at Yaneff but to the American-style fare served therein.

If I were blind the artistic presentation of Yaneff’s American cuisine tasting menu – presentation so sublime it begs not to be disrupted - may be lost to me, but the taste would not. Dish after dish - wild sea bass, grilled octopus, crab cakes, truffle gnocchi - the expectation would be set, surpassed and set again. Yellow fin tuna cubes with a soy air and avocado mousse, the tuna perfectly spongy, would tell me Yaneff use high-quality, fresh ingredients.

If I were a prawn I’d cross my many legs and hope the nets of Yaneff’s suppliers pulled me from my watery home. I’d let the scallion oil wash over me before being consumed, the lingering chew and finger licking of my killer signalling I’d given my life to the good food cause.

If I were a scientist I wouldn’t be fooled by the London Fog pudding, its misty smog seemingly magical. I’d know the fruit was shrouded in liquid nitrogen and know not to eat it with gusto because the fruit would stick to my tongue.

If I were an exhibitionist I would move from the restaurant to the club, the revellers of which I’d have previously observed through the sound-proof glass panels separating the two experiences. I would throw some moves on the dance floor and thank my foresight for wearing my swankiest outfit.

If I were to tell you about my evening at Piccadilly restaurant Yaneff at DSTRKT, I’d tell you the restaurant doesn’t sacrifice substance for swag. I’d tell you it’s a destination in its own right not an afterthought to the club, and I’d tell you that Yaneff at DSTRKT is one of the best restaurants I’ve experienced this year.

"We really enjoyed the Jamboree Club when we visited to listen (and dance to) the wonderful Dom Pipkin and the Ikos. Wonderful night - great people there too. But so sad to hear that the Club may not..." Which venue is this?
