Daawat Review

Book a table at Daawat

Top 10 things you need to know about Daawat:

1) This Indian restaurant in the West End is a lot like your mum: the appearance is stuck in the 1970s but, by Delhi (!), the aptitude for cooking satisfying meals is reassuring.

2) Don’t be put off as you walk through the Elvis-in-Vegas-era Strand Palace hotel to find the spacious restaurant. Just admire the restaurant’s roaring homage to dowdiness, and ask for a double-sized table; you’ll need the space for all that lovely South Indian cuisine.

3) The three-course pre-theatre meal is yours for a little over £20. Although, if you’re attempting to squeeze it all in before a show at the Lyceum, Novello, or Vaudeville Theatre, you’ll need to book for about 4pm!

4) Instead, play the long game. Slide yourself passed the fan-shaped napkins, the tragic wallpaper, and muted conversations, and mosey your way through the menu’s many hidden talents and vibrant colours; such as the starters - the best part - including the famous chilli mili chicken wings or the artistically arranged chappli lamb kebab with fried egg and cumin-apple chutney - spice levels to get the party in your mouth started.

5) Don’t judge a book by its cover, but certainly assess the quality of the fragrant dishes across the expansive menu by the number of Asian families here. They clearly know a decent lamb kothu, Grandma kodi kura or seabass varuval when they eat one.

6) Although, the restaurant’s broad demographics show that food originating from the Indian state of Kerala is also popular with old couples, young ladies glued to their iPhones, and independent business travellers looking for a particular level of comfort that only soporific music and coconut duck mappas can offer.

7) There is a lengthy and inexpensive wine list (for the West End) but seriously, this is Indian food: the wine you should order is called Cobra beer.

8) The chocolate samosa is a shareable dish; unless you yearn for extreme richness in a singular dessert.

9) The menu also converts a traditional afternoon tea into something that has more of an Indian persuasion, including Bombay burgers, and a mini rasamalai (with scones and clotted cream, obvs).

10) Shorten the menu, rotate the dishes, ease up on unnecessarily heavy sauces, and update the decor to at least this century, and this restaurant could be so good, even your mum would love it.

"Absolutely loved this place, one of the best meals I've had in ages, mostly because everything tasted so damn good and we had such a laugh in there. It's pretty small, so make sure to book in advance..." Which venue is this?
