Bianco43 Review

Top 10 things we learned about Bianco 43 restaurant:

1) It’s Italian. Really, really Italian. From the grand, Romanesque décor, to the all-Italian staff, to the menu.

2) Massimo and Fabrizio - the duo behind Bianco 43 restaurants in Blackheath and Greenwich - have ticked all the boxes with this new Trafalgar Square branch.

3) It’s attached to The Northumberland Hotel, around the corner from Charing Cross. As a result, most of the clientele right now are tourists. That’ll change though as word gets out about the fantastic…

4) …food; which, as well as being really, really Italian, is damn good.  My starter of scamorza alla piastra con caponata Siciliana was gorgeous - smoky grilled cheese served with a tangy Mediterranean vegetable stew. Our complimentary garlic flatbread – lightly charred with fine slices of fresh garlic sprinkled on top – went with it perfectly.

5) They serve authentic, thin-based pizzas. And pasta too - with Sicilian classics such as casarecce alla norma (aubergines, fresh tomato, basil and grated ricotta) and unusual offerings like strascinati al ragu’ bianco di pesce e broccoli (homemade pasta with white fish ragu’ and broccoli).

6) But I was stuffed after starters so went for a lighter main. The Filetto Di Branzino (sea bass fillet with fresh cherry tomato, lemon and basil), was presented curled up on its side, like a giant rollmop. It needed a dash of salt for my liking but was served on well-seasoned slices of browned potato.

7) Having sworn we were full, my friend and I still managed to polish off a smooth mascarpone and chocolate cream and a trio of sorbets – zingy lime, honeyed strawberry and creamy walnut.

8) The service is spot on. The good-looking young staff are warm, welcoming and efficient. Our charming waiter even offered us an off-menu Aperitif: a crisp sloe gin mojito. Ask for it when you’re there. Which brings me onto the…

9) …drinks. As well as the cocktails, a substantial Italian wine list and Peroni beer means all tastes are covered. The only non-Italian thing about the whole restaurant is the Champagne, which starts at £8 for a glass of Perrier-Jouet.

10) The one thing lacking at Biancho43 was atmosphere - it was a bit quiet when we visited - but then, it’s only been open a few weeks. Based on the top notch food, Central London setting and excellent service, it won’t stay that way for long.

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
