Adam Street Review
There are two ways to make sure that no one forgets where your bar is 1) Be excellent 2) Call it after the address. Adam Street, then, is doubly memorable.
A staircase leads you down to this private members’ club (joining fee £150 then annual subscription £250 +), a sophisticated but unstuffy venue in cream and simple berry-coloured furnishings.
Comprising of three bars, a restaurant and a quiet room (complete with broadband sockets), the club has been built in vaults under the Strand so its infrastructure is really quite cool (as in impressive not chilly).
What I really liked is that there was no uppity ness at all. We went for a quiz night (Tuesday) hosted by the vair funny Richard Bacon in the bar area two storeys down and even though we lost dismally, the winning team used the prize money to buy everyone a drink. Marvelous. In fact, the only starchy thing about Adam Street is the pristine napery in the restaurant and that’s the way it should be, right?
Staff are swift and smiley, and watch out for a stunning lass called Seeta who’ll show you around should you need her to. Now onto the issue of moolah, wines start from £15.50 a bottle and don’t rise to silly prices (the priciest is £27.50) though main courses are slightly heftier wavering around £20 a main. Of course, the membership is going to set you back a bit in the first place, though if you were looking for a place have membership then this should be top of your list. Membership costs for, say, The White House in Clapham are in a similar band but Adam Street is far, far out of their league.
So remember, it’s Adam Street. Quite frankly, you won’t forget it....read more
