Ichi Sushi & Sashimi Bar Review

It was an evening of contrasts at the Ichi Sushi and Sashimi bar as London met the Far East in spectacular fashion. The oriental eatery occupies a fanciful corner of the Mezzanine floor at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in the popular South Bank quarter. Join this tale of two cities as I indulge on the fish of London.

Big Ben meets Bamboo:
This intimate restaurant caters for around 30 guests. Only a couple of tables face the floor to ceiling window and they’re easily the best seats in the house. The spectacular view of the bridge overlooking Westminster and the Houses of Parliament adds to this overall dining experience. Taking a step back, or just looking away from the window, the Japanese theme of the restaurant is fully embraced: elegant black granite tables, bamboo dividers at either side of the dining room, and even Bonsai trees perched at the contemporary counter. All that is missing is traditional Taiko drumming and the relaxing sounds of a water feature. There's no denying that I feel as if I'm in one of those private rooms in "Kill Bill Vol 1", except I'm at a table, there's no Charlie Brown and thankfully, no crazy chick in a yellow biker suit...

Western Guests meets Eastern Service:
Japan is renowned for its excellent customer service; personalised attention focused on the wellbeing of its guests. England, in most cases, is not. So, what a pleasant surprise to find that Ichi offers a little of the Far Eastern culture in the heart of Westminster. Our waitress (Rebecca) is there to meet and greet us at the door and after another unneeded wipe of our table, my plus one and I are seated. Next come the menus and then the crockery, with chopsticks and small serving plates set up in meticulous fashion. And it doesn’t stop there. Food and drink recommendations flow in, we’re served faster than we can order, Rebecca is single-handedly working the whole floor with not one customer (count them – not one) left disgruntled. A-ma-zing.

Sushi & Sashimi (doesn’t) meet Fish N Chips:
There are many fish restaurants and many Japanese restaurants in London. However, putting the two together doesn’t always guarantee mind-blowing cuisine. Sushi plates usually set a diner back in the region of £35 a pop, so it was refreshing to see some combination plates offering traditional fare at more reasonable prices. With sushi, sashimi and nigiri selections, the special sushi and sashimi combination plates are by far the best deal. Rebecca serves a rather delectable looking platter with salmon, prawn, tuna and yellow tail nigiri, the same cuts as sashimi and crab and dragon rolls. Not that there’s anything wrong with good old cod, but the fact that it isn’t deep fried, doesn’t come with a side of potato, and is somewhat healthier, makes me think that Japanese food and its raw innocence lends it the kudos it requires for the uncomfortably high price tag in The City. After mixing wasabi and soy sauce together (which wouldn’t ever take the place of our famed mushy peas), a flavoursome Far Eastern cultural element is added to my palate, if nothing else.

Mojito meets, well, Mojito.
Japanese beverage delights such as Asahi Superdry, Kirin and Sake are seen on many a menu. But at the height of a sun-filled UK summer in the heart of London, nothing beats a nice cool, refreshing, minty mojito. Not something that could ever be Japan-fied, but Ichi give it a go anyway. Simply add a shot or two of Sake to the mojito mix and a Far East version is born. A little sour for my mouth, better for savoury tongues than not, I decide to stick to my trusty Cosmopolitan, thank you. There’s always a fine selection of wines and soft drinks for the less adventurous – or the plain old thirsty.

Ichi meets number one?:
Ichi is the translation of the number ‘one’ and as far as the cuisine stakes are concerned, they’re not blowing their own trumpet. Usually, hotel restaurants are overpriced with minute servings, but Ichi’s decent sized dishes, immaculate presentation and Ichi-ban customer service make the #80 meal a great deal for two. Tokyo may be a good 6,000 miles away but a little Far Eastern culture can now be experienced on a plate down the road in the heart of Westminster. Sugoi, desu ne?

“The food is excellent and the service is pretty good. It's in a hotel so is on the pricey side, but good value if you want freshly-made Japanese food. Recommended.”
