Giraffe Review
Book a table at Giraffe
Just as the giraffe makes use of its extra reach to devour the tastiest leaves, its restaurant namesake goes to comparable lengths to give its customers an agreeable dining experience. It may be part of a chain but each venue has plenty of character thanks to an upbeat decor and ‘world music’ soundtrack on the inside or relaxed dining under roomy parasols outside.
The Southbank branch is situated conveniently beneath the Royal Festival Hall and just yards from the river. It’s little wonder that the eclectic crowds come here in healthy numbers, from young couples on weekday evenings to a big family gathering (with balloons for the little ones) over the weekend.
Whatever time the hunger hits you, Giraffe and its welcoming staff are on hand. At breakfast there’s the temptation of “Rude health” organic porridge topped with bananas, strawberries and honey. The consistency is fabulous and it really does taste good for you. And if you thought we can’t do pancakes in the UK then you hadn’t reckoned on the stacked banana and blueberry pancakes with maple syrup here. Two words: fantastically fluffy.
From twelve noon right through to dinner time there’s plenty to get your teeth into as well. Highlights include open grilled chicken and mango tacos (how can you not be intrigued by a green tomatillo salsa?) and regular, fish, chicken or falafel burgers. The portions are generous but leave room if you possibly can for decadent desserts such as the rocky road ice cream sundae topped with marshmallows. There’s a convivial atmosphere here right into the evening hours.
As for beverages, try a fruit smoothie like the Tutti Frutti Lifesaver, loaded up with fresh blended peach, apple, kiwi and mango. Elsewhere, impressive attention to detail is shown when it comes to wines. Giraffe has forsaken the ‘house wine’ option and instead gone for a range to suit any mood and any food. You can have everything from an American Wandering Bear Chardonnay to a Toscana Sangiovese Cabernet. Sensibly, diners can go for a 125ml or 175ml option as well as bottle, covering all the bases.

“Giraffe never fails to deliver. What was a change of venue for a breakfast meeting with colleagues has now become a favourite haunt. Friendly staff, quick service and excellent hearty food.”
