Last Nights of Havana Review

Last Nights of Havana is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things to know about Last Nights of Havana:

1) Step through the magic curtains into another time, a different place. The 1940s have been waiting for you and everyone is ready to dance. As the neon sign above bar clearly states: anything might happen!

2) Before you even reach the bar to order your first (of many) rum cocktails, the musical rhythms of songo, timba, rhumba and salsa have your various body parts making involuntary flicking and kicking movements. Those smiling assassins on stage have you, and everyone else, in the palms of their nibble-fingered hands. The sound of the live music provoking toes to tap, and hips to sway. You are possessed by the aural pleasures of son cubano.

3) You struggle to the bar, fighting the infectious Latin vibes; hardly able to remain still. There is only one way to treat this Caribbean fever: barman, a good dose of rum, if you please!

4) However, the dancing Bermuda shirt and straw hat behind the bar needs you to make a selection: which rum? There are 40+ to choose from, emanating from Bermuda, Columbia, Jamaica, Guatemala, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago. Give yourself a proper slap around the face with an El Presidente cocktail, essentially an angry Manhattan due to the 12 year old El Dorado rum, bitters and grenadine.

5) You notice that nobody is on their mobile phone. How refreshing! In Cuba, if you’re not engaged with the music, you’re engaged in conversation.

6) The guitar, claves, bongos, maracas, trumpet and double bass suddenly pipe up and an impromptu line dancing class breaks out. The gravitational pull of the dancefloor is too much to resist and dance recklessly around the tall leafy plants and Art Nouveau lampshades, picking up comrades as you move; strangers one minute, sexy salsa partners the next.

7) Don’t worry; the high-rafted wooden ceilings and sculpted nudes above the traditional marble bar keep many secrets safe.

8) After several dizzying, frenetic minutes, you take a well-earned break to wipe the beads of sweat from your brow and order sustenance: cassava chips and a grilled sandwich about the size and shape of The Shard. You follow this with a sweet dessert: the Creme de Vie cocktail made with Bacardi 8 year old rum.

9) To wind down from all this excitement, you chill out with a Romeo and Juliet Churchill cigar; a game of traditional Cuban dominoes, Double 9; and a 12 Mile Limit, the end-of-the-night cocktail that includes rum, cognac and rye in a chilled silver goblet.

10) And to think you almost turned up at the wrong bar. Don’t confuse one of the best Latin bars in London with Skylight bar around the corner. When heading for Tobacco Dock, find the frigate; an incongruous landlocked tall ship is your beacon for fun times.
