The Waterfront Review

The Waterfront is featured in these Guides:

Let's say you've been searching for somewhere great to eat out, far removed from the public eye and blessed with a view few have ever seen before. You’ll also want it fresh, stylish and beautifully sculpted. Basically, you’re looking for everything Britney’s ubiquitous ‘fou-fou’ isn’t.

Well, all crude jokes aside, you’re in luck. The Waterfront, next to Wandsworth Bridge, is all this and more. One striking similarity The Waterfront has with Commando Spears, however, is that neither was the first of its kind (see also Lohan and Hilton). Young’s, the brewers, have an addictive propensity towards renting large blocks of new south bank property from developers/dragon slayers, St George. Once it’s pimped up and ordained with a watery name (see also The Riverside just oop tut rurd), the idyllic riverview venue waits patiently for custom.

Impossible to find in both the real and virtual worlds (no friend of Google’s), The Waterfront is biding its time at the bottom of the new Battersea (Hard To) Reach complex. The approach is like walking through a building site. Mainly because that’s what it is, but then once you’ve got past the worst of it, the best is yet to come: a homely roaring fire winking suggestively through the floor-to-ceiling windows; enormous Art Deco furnishings that look like they’ve been pilfered from the set of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory; a walk-around bar that is not, thankfully, manned by Ted Danson OR Kirstie Alley (yes, I said ‘manned’); vased flowers so imposing they beg the question – is this the day of the triffids?; mirrors so vast even Robbie Williams could see his whole head; and circular booths so ridiculously capacious they could seat an entire delegation of African elephants. And their luggage (or should that be ‘trunks’).

So before you even start with the quaffing and the scoffing, you know you’re better of than whence you came. The booze will adequately hold your attention but this is more a pigging-out location than a hangover-inducing one.

Although the lunch, dinner and Sunday menus are practically one and the same, it is worth noting that the chef was an f-ing Gordon Ramsey student, so the quality is higher than George Michael behind the wheel of a car.

But how good is it? Well, once you’ve happily munched your way through the scallops and pancetta entrée; when the last of the pate-heavy ‘drunken duck’ sausages have proven a worthy accompaniment to the wintery mustard mash; after the poached pear drowned in Merlot has disappeared down your beak; and when your peering glances around the room calculate the likelihood of getting away with licking your plate clean, only then will you be sure exactly how good the food really is.

As it’s only a few weeks old visiting The Waterfront is like being the first person to sit in James Bond’s new Aston Martin, only to find there’s no keys in the ignition. Or an engine connected to the other side. Somehow, though, you know there will be. Come the summer months this place will be blockbusters. Not literally, of course. Blockbusters couldn’t afford the rent.

Build it and they will come. Otherwise 8 out of 10

“This is freelancer's dream location. Wifi, great view, plenty of nice seating and light, decent and varied food on the menu, and generally a bit of a hidden gem (which means it's quiet during the day).”

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
