The Ship Review

Best for: alfresco riverside BBQs and cosy dining rooms.

Great: menu; hospitality.

Cap’n Price at your service. Gather round, ye landlubbers, and I’ll tell you the tale of how I set sail on The Ship, together with First Mate Long John +1, on a great voyage of discovery and derring-do.

We departed late in the afternoon from the good town of Wandsworth, off the gentle river Thames. With nought but the winds of critical hot air in our sails and the maps and charts of culinary curiosity to guide us, we took to the seas, unfurling the Fluid London flag.

Our first task was to negotiate the infamous Bar Cove, and its choppy, crowded waters. The formidable, well-stocked Bar itself extended round the room a full 360 degrees, and steady sea legs were required to navigate its rough and ready floorboards.

However, several flagons of that mystical grog they call “Pimms” brought us round to an even keel, and our spirits were rallied by live music and a pub quiz. We soon harried amidships and weighed anchor in the uncharted waters of Restaurant Reef.

Here, by contrast, we found cosy quarters and stately, old-fashioned furniture, as the sun streamed through the windows and skylight overhead.

The Restaurant floor was manned by an exceptionally friendly crew of able seamen, and with the wind in our sails and complimentary bread and butter at our side, +1 and I boldly set forth round the Bay of Entrées.

I’ve been all over the seven seas, and sampled untold delicacies from Singapore to Santiago, but verily the food from the Ship’s open-front kitchen takes some beating; and all for but a handful of doubloons.

My pig cheek starter was a hearty meal in itself, while the seared scallops with oyster & samphire risotto were enough to make a gruff, weather-beaten mariner well up a little.

The smooth sailing continued through the Strait of Main Courses, including delicious monkfish on a bed of lentils and lamb with triple-cooked chips. +1 and I agreed that this certainly beat picking the weavils out of biscuits, a ritual to which we’ve grudgingly become accustomed on the cruel sea.

The Cape of Good Desserts was up next on the horizon, as I sampled the bounty of foreign lands in the form of grilled pineapple, passion fruit marshmallows, mango slices and coconut sorbet. As for Long John +1, he had to be chained to the mast in order to resist a second helping of banoffee cheesecake, so that we could hoist the mainsail and head for home.

Yet, there was just time to set a course to Barbecue Islands, a sprawling archipelago of sheltered wooden tables and heavy-duty grilling machines by the shores of the Thames that is guaranteed to attract the meat-crazed natives on sunny alfresco days.

Leaving a perilous squall of laboured metaphors in our wake, we arrived back in Wandsworth around two hours after we set off, with a bellyful of wine (very passable New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, actually) and a headful of stories. Let ne’er a salty dog tell you otherwise: the Ship is a fine, sophisticated vessel that I’d trust with my life, or at least with my lunch.

“Not been to The Ship since I was a little girl and had to sit on the step with lemonade as children weren't allowed in, that was 65yrs ago when I lived in Stephendale Road just over the other side of the bridge. I now live in Newark Nott's when we came down to London couldn't leave without a visit, although it has changed a lot I still enjoyed my visit and the food. My dad was going to buy it in the 1950's mum said you might as well you are there nearly as much as home. we raised a glass to him while we where there. Looking forward to our next visit. ”

“The Ship generally has a really nice vibe to it in the winter and summer. Typical of the South West London scene. The food is awesome too. I ate black pudding, as part of a starter, first time ever, and I can honestly say I could eat it all the time... accept I am a vegetarian! Never seen a rugby player though. Shame.”

“Went here on Friday night after work... what a wonderful place to let your hair down and enjoy the sunshine on the massive decked area. My friend and I had an amazing burger from the outdoor barbeque and then got drunk along with the hundreds of others. It was a great atmosphere and we even spotted three of the McFly boys there. Great night out and a top gastropub. Oh and pints of Bombardier were only £2 because it was St George's Day - result!”

“The beer garden has had a new refurb and looks great! Managed to catch one of the last summery Sundays of 2009 here and loved the atmosphere and outside area. Only disappointment is that you can't really see the river from majority of the garden, which is a shame as your right next to it! Highly recommend this pub!”
