bbar Review

Book a table at bbar

Top 10 thing to know about Bbar:

1) Bbar is near The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace and a short walk from Apollo Victoria theatre. It has the perfect mix of South African vibes and fun décor. From the greenery brightening up cosy corners, to abstract canvases in tribal patterned frames, the South African flavour is definitely there, but you’re not poked in the face with it. Lovers of leopard print *throws hand wildly in the air* will have a feast for the eyes thanks to a safari-style print lepo sofa and staff in leopard print aprons.

2) There’s little we love more than waiting staff who have all the answers. Our waitress knew the score, sharing her favourite cocktails and telling us what was in the food. Later, another member of staff brough creamy African liqueurs to finish off our dinner. We may have got overexcited.

3) What is dinner without a cocktail? The Peach and Rosemary Sour is a herby, fruity mix of peach vodka, rosemary syrup, lemon and lime juice, served in a frothy ice-filled glass with a rosemary sprig for garnish. The Havana 7 Old Fashioned is a short serve of rum, Angostura bitters, orange bitters and honey; a must-try for anyone who loves the classic cocktail but wants to give it a dark rum twist. The glassware is beyond beautiful. Sadly, after sipping your drink down, you have to give the glasses back.

4) After poring over the menu of tempting dishes for several minutes longer than should be deemed acceptable, we eventually decided on wild garlic battered calamari and bobotie spring rolls, which were shared to avoid food envy. We were slightly confused when the calamari was accompanied All Gold tomato sauce, very similar to ketchup. We gave it a chance, but remained unconvinced. Ketchup aside, the calamari was massive and tender. The hero dish, however, was those spring rolls. Stuffed full of beef mince and curry flavours, it was flanked by spicy chutney, which we would’ve happily smothered over everything in sight.

5) The main event was above and beyond: steak and chicken. The 10oz ribeye arrived perfectly cooked and seasoned; the parmesan-crusted chicken schnitzel was zesty and moist. We were almost swayed into ordering the duck shepherd’s pie. It would’ve been quacking delicious.

6) Two words: brioche burger. Just when you thought you’d already sampled the best burgers in London, the culinary masterminds behind Bbar’s menu turn it sweet, swapping a dry bun with a syrup-soaked brioche and the patty with a velvety chocolate ice cream. Also on the dessert list, the humbly-named honeycomb ice cream frankly deserves all the hype we’re about to give it. Ice cream schmice cream! This is some kind of sub-zero cake of dreams; a slab of creamy joy with chunks of the chewy good stuff scattered throughout. Order it, marry it, live forever in happiness with it.

7) No review of Bbar would be complete without our uninvited yet very welcome dinner guest: The Elephant, a wooden head perched on the shelf beside us. He oversaw everything like an over-attentive sommelier making sure you’re sniffing the Malbec bouquet correctly. We loved The Elephant, pointy tusks, cheeky trunk, and all, and we trust him with all our table secrets. What happens with The Elephant at Bbar stays with The Elephant at Bbar.

8) Despite visiting Bbar on a relatively quiet weekday evening, the feeling you get from the separate bar area is wanting to come here every Saturday night and sink cocktails until midnight.

9) Bbar is also the ideal spot for private events, with two exclusive hire areas. 43 Below is a basement bar that will cater for any excuse you can think of for piling all your friends into one room for an evening of fun and cocktails. The Jubilee Suite is flooded with natural light making it the perfect space for lunches, afternoon teas and meetings. They also offer cocktail masterclasses which will have you mixing and muddling like a pro!

10) Mist cocktails are a thing, y’know? A wonderful, wonderful thing. Adding a little extra flair and magic, Bbar’s vapour cocktails are crafted with a naturally-flavoured mist. Stand outs include the Perfect Manhattan, a mix of Canada Club rye, vermouth and cherry with a wild cherry mist, and the Aged Negroni, using Sipsmith gin, Campari and Punt e Mes on a cloud of Valencia orange mist.
