The Old Red Lion Review

Best for: Warming South London food and drink in an antiquated pub atmosphere.

Great: Pork Belly, Chocolate Mousse, Prawns in a Pint Glass.

“Sorry, I’m married”: the first words the manager of the Old Red Lion pub in Kennington said to me. Calm down dude! I’ll have to revise my choice of words next time I ask if the manager is available.

Married or not, the lady is a lucky one. I’ll give it to the guy, a somewhat charming smile, and confident glide from bar to tables were most impressive. Considering he was the only one working the floor on a Friday night, his charm would need to radiate one way: outwards! Padding about, coolly taking orders and serving customers, Mr. Married was in his element. Service was slow, but hey, cool and calm were the order of the day. Patience wasn’t on the menu though, so I had to bring my own.

Tall people alert: The Old Red Lion pub, although newly refurbished, is full of 18th Century olden day charm. The door leading into the dining room requires even a person of average height to crouch. Fossilised old beams are beautifully restored and stand proudly holding deep red walls. The bar is framed by a carved, wooden panel depicting grapes, and the words ‘The Old Red Lion’ float grandly above the bar in red vines of cast iron. Oh, and the majestic fire place, that once burned hot, retires quietly, adorned with all sorts of interesting accessories. The Old Red Lion had sucked me in, just as you would a piece of spaghetti.

It’s clear that there has been a lot of thought gone into the menu. Wine was served in a decanter-like jar, and poured into cocktail glasses. Not what I’m used to, but I liked it nevertheless. In fact, there were all sorts of quirky touches. Our starter of Prawns in a Pint Glass were, well.... fitting quite perfectly with the cool theme. I have to say, although beautifully presented, there is something off-putting about eating cold prawns. I was told that’s the way to eat them. I conceded and proceeded to warm up to the coolness. The prawns and I compromised on luke warm.

Luke warm and I were happily compatible when the mains arrived, since, after all, I ordered the Pork Belly Salad with Rocket and Pomegranate. The Old Red Lion may indeed be a pub, but the grub is not typically so. You wouldn’t get a meat and 3 veg here. In fact, our neighbours, who were one course behind us throughout, chatted with excitement each time our next course came out, and proceeded to mirror what we’d chosen.

Luke warm and I were starting to fall for each other; nearly like-liking each other by the time dessert came. It was the Red Wine Roasted Plums with Honey for me. My colleague, on the other hand, went for the chocolate mousse. I’ve never been a fan of mousse, but it looked so delicious served in a whiskey glass I couldn’t resist. So I dumped the plums for the mousse in the end (sorry Luke warm, I went for cold this time round!).

Feeling quietly satisfied, and as huddles of people in corners got rowdy and merry, we thought we better make a move, before we were totally lulled into the warm hub of the Lion. Old it may be, and the fireplace may no longer burn hot, but the Old Lion still burns a deep, warm Red.

“I went to the old red lion for a couple of drinks with some mates after work. AND WOW! what a change this place has made. It looks so much better and the customers are tolerable. Had a nibble and thought that the food was pretty good for a pub and even the toilets are new. I really like it and I'll definitely go back soon.”

"My Gulascheintopf war perfekt and so was the Weissbier. I was in Kingston Steins. I do have a few suggestions for decor and table. 1. you need a little jar of toothpicks on the table to get meat out from..." Which venue is this?

"I visited browns alone after work and got convinced to spend an hour in the “VIP” room with Jennifer - which is just a corner of the private dance area - no privacy at all. I essentially paid £500 for..." Which venue is this?
