Four Degree Review

Four Degree is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things to know about Four Degree:

1) You may know the difference between your sushi and your sashimi, or your tatiki and your tempura, but here’s a curveball that will shake things up a little bit. What makes Four Degree different is the French twist they throw into some of their dishes. Think asparagus with truffle butter and crispy wonton tacos with duck rillettes. The menu - created by talented Head Chef Pedro Miranda - is bold and enticing.

2) The restaurant is next to London’s tallest residential building, One St George Wharf, on the embankment near Vauxhall station. If you want to arrive James Bond style, Four Degree is perfectly located for the river taxi.

3) Don’t miss out on the cocktails. The extensive list is split into past, present and future libations inspired by Asian ingredients and Buddhism. Drinks look like works of art; one accompanied by dry ice emanating from an oyster shell. Each creation is expertly made and has a story. Check out the “Blind Fate” – a citrusy, herby cocktail made with pisco, finished with a Matcha tea foam. A must-have is the humble Martini; choose between yuzu-inspired or one with Japanese olives. The garnish is guaranteed to be memorable – electric daisy flowers. Pop one in your mouth at the start and enjoy the burst of citrus that is followed by a tingly sensation, ending in a pleasant (and temporary!) numbing of the throat to cleanse the palate. James Bond would definitely approve.

4) The sushi isn’t cheap but it’s deliciously different. The sushi to order are the Four Degree twist rolls – which are unique to the restaurant. The spicy salmon is not to be missed. If sushi isn’t your thing, sample the fried chicken kara-age, tempura vegetables or grilled robata dishes.

5) There are some quirky fusion dishes on the menu that make this place unique. The foie gras teriyaki takes perfectly cooked foie gras to the next level by marinating it in sake, soy and mirin. The lamb chops come with a French ratatouille and a chilli miso. Charming, slick staff are always on hand to explain dishes and help you navigate the menu.

6) OK, this is swish, but it gets swisher. Four Degree is also the home to Europe’s first Macallan whisky lounge – an Aladdin’s cave of whiskies to enjoy away from the bustle above the main restaurant. The room looks like a lush museum housing whiskies in glass cabinets (including a 1946 Macallan Select Reserve for whisky buffs) with thick carpets and even a humidor full of Cuban cigars.

7) When we visited, summer appeared briefly, so we hung out on the heated, west-facing terrace which has sweeping views of the river Thames. Top tip: For the ultimate date night brownie points, book outside terrace tables and watch the sun set behind Battersea Power Station.

8) By now, you’re feeling the zen of this place. There’s a reason for that. Beyond the façade of the silver mirrored tiled sushi bar is a spiritual vibe. When it opened, Tibetan monks blessed the restaurant every day for a month and a Feng Shui Master made sure everything was just so. That explains the generous amount of space between tables!

9) Now you’re in a zen-like state, make room for puds. Our highlight was the melting chocolate fondant with a dreamy green tea ice cream.

10) Four Degree is definitely high end and definitely one of the coolest Japanese restaurants in London. To finish off the night, grab a seat back in the bar and settle down for more killer cocktails and people watching.
