King Edward VII Review

Dust off the files marked ‘English history’ from your classroom memories. Search for Edward VII. Realise you never paid attention and, therefore, know nothing. Hence, for your benefit, here is a quick reminder: he was a King; his Mom-Ma - Queen Victoria - burdened him with the popular name for a person of that title; he was a socialite and a known philanderer (his great-great grandson, Prince Charles, interestingly chose to keep very close to the royal gene pool when he diddled Camilla, the great granddaughter of his own mistress).

The King Edward VII pub, or the King Eddie as it’s now trendily known, is a lot like its regal namesake, many things to many people. It is socially fixated, Victiorian in manufacture and a beacon of Englishness. Despite the obvious absense of big screen TVs and one-arm bandits (that would actually taint its appeal) this is as Anglo-Saxon as it gets. More English than Hobnobs, dogging and hosepipe bans during the rainy season, you almost expect the barman to demand three groats for your flagan of ale. Very fine ales at that, a great many produced by small British breweries. And the wines? Yep, a lot of them are English too!

The ‘pub’ section of this grade II-listed building is sunken low enough below the road to give good vantage of passing skirts and the ceiling beams are at an optimum height for head injuries. The remaining split levels are shared between the executive leather lounge (made from real executives) and the suitably small, cozy and ungarden-like beer garden.

The homely restaurant is the jewel in the crown, however. Fresh bread baked on site, sauces made from scratch and plenty of exuberant broccoli and smiling bovine photography staring excitedly from the walls. And then there’re the menus. Constructed by the chef, who once F-ing worked with Gordon F-ing Ramsey, there’s the bar menu, the weekday restaurant menu, the weekend menu, the dessert menu, the white wine menu, the red wine menu, the menu of menus and, just in case you have a menu problem, the once-a-month/sounds-like-a-swingers-club Supper Club menu. All of which convey a sense of “Know What They’re On About” throwing out words like Caponata, piccalilli and samphire.

It’s also good to see the staff don’t mind the all-too-common crazy South African running amok, talking gibberish to all the patrons. But seeing as he is the assistant manager, they could hardly kick him out.

The only thorn in this English rose is its location. Ye olde style was perhaps more suited to Shakespeare’s Stratford of yore rather than the Olympic Dumpground of today.

If only the King Eddie could dislodge from the British mainland, become a floating principality and circle the world enlightening all those that board her in the “ways of the English”. Otherwise 9 out of 10

“King Edward VII is one of the best pubs in the East End! It's an old pub with a real traditional and modern feel. The atmosphere and range of beer and wine is fantastic. They have a restaurant and both the food there and in the bar is superb, tasty, fresh and value for money. A real must visit if you are at that end of town!”
