Yumchaa Review

If, like me, you hate the mass produced, impersonal, noisy chain coffee shops cluttering the high street, or if, again like me, you only drink coffee when it is wrapped in chocolate at the end of a tin of Quality Street, then, just like me, you will adore all that embodies the quaint little tea shop named Yumchaa.

On a buzzing Friday night, when the majority of Soho suits, shoppers and tourists are flocking to the pubs and bars in the area, the cool arty crowds are heading to catch up over a pot of tea and a slice of cake with their equally trendy friends.

Like a sheep, I followed, intrigued to know why the craze of tea and cake is making a comeback. I may not have a portfolio of artwork under my arm or a quirky hat on my head but a thirst for something different is all I needed to equip me for a visit.

Yumchaa is a tea room that takes you home. OK, not literally. It doesn’t have a door to a secret train platform. Nor does it have a tardis in the toilet. Yumchaa takes you home in the sense that it feels like you’re sitting in your Grandmother's kitchen. It's warm, it's comforting, it's just what a tea shop should be... just with much better music (sorry Grandma!) and no tea plate for all the old tea bags that the dear lady has collected throughout the day.

The teashop prides itself on the fact that all the teas, that are brewed right before your eyes, are loose leaf – that’s right, it’s Yumchaa’s strict no tea bagging policy!

Unlike the original old English cuppa, it's the huge range of teas that puts the Yum in to Chaa. There are over 20 to choose, from the strong black caffeine-rich tea - such as Notting Hill which is Keemun black tea, apricot, strawberry, marigold blossom and cornflowers - that will keep you up all night, to the gentle white tea - such as Tranquility made with a mix of Pai Mu Tan, lavender, Egyptian chamomile flowers and lemongrass - that is full of beneficial antioxidants. But we don't need to tell you about the teas, you can see them and smell them for yourself before you buy them at the counter.

But for all the tea in China (ba doom doom tshhh) you couldn’t stop me from sampling all the food delights to compliment my tea.

It’s easy to picture a cuddly old granny putting her undivided attention into making the homemade cakes, sandwiches and salads that stand proudly at the tea bar. What better way is there to soak up a cup of freshly brewed tea than to share a piece of chocolate fudge cake with a friend, well it would be rude not to!

For such a brilliant location the prices are considerably cheap, with a pot of tea and a slice of cake costing no more than £4.50. It’s no wonder that lunchtimes are the busiest with local office workers retreating from their desks and shoppers taking refuge from the crowds in the tea room.

Even if there isn’t time to sit and watch the world go by (or keep yourself amused by people-watching the other customers and their weird and wacky paintings) you are more than welcome to pick up a take away. Whether it’s tea to go in a paper cup or tea for home in a paper bag – you can take the spirit of the tea shop with you.

“I love this restaurant especially at lunch time, it's a great place to take clients to for a quick coffee and slice of cake. The customers in there tend to be quite quirky, lots of people working with one of Yumchaa's delicious teas. My favourite is Red Christmas, it's smells and looks delicious and it's so cheap in there to. A real good find.”

Food

Soho offers a slightly different atmosphere from Camden - a place for breakfast, brunch, lunch, tea and cake breaks through out the day, as well as space for client meetings and a well deserved place to relax in the centre of town.

"I visited browns alone after work and got convinced to spend an hour in the “VIP” room with Jennifer - which is just a corner of the private dance area - no privacy at all. I essentially paid £500 for..." Which venue is this?
