Thirst Review

Book a table at Thirst

First off, I must own up and clear the air. I was supposed to arrive at half nine, but unexpected tickets to Ben Harper at Brixton Academy kinda put everything back a bit......... it was midnight when I finally got to Thirst Bar in Soho, and not only was I shamefully late but I was shamefully drunk.

Even though the bar was packed, we didn’t have to wait in a queue. Nor did it take more than a few seconds to find a seat in the upstairs room where we could place our drinks on a table made for midgets (or maybe that’s to conserve space because Thirst can best be described as an ‘intimate’ space). Unfortunately by the time we arrived there was a cover charge (£5 after 11:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and £3 Monday to Thursday) but if you’re smart you’ll get your booty to the dance floor earlier than that. In my personal haze, the upstairs of the mini-club was a bit of a techno dream. I seem to remember fairy-like drawings flying across the windows.

Downstairs the beats were pumping, the dance floor was in full Friday night swing, and everyone seemed to be chilling out or rocking out in an electronic kind of way. The DJ looked positively bad-ass with a cheeky glowing sign above his head saying ‘NO REQUESTS.’ This is one of the sole pieces of décor in Thirst bar, and contributes to the overall attitude of the place, which, balanced with the ultra friendly staff, should be enough to keep attracting a trendy late-twenties Soho crowd.

But just in case good tunes and a simply sweet vibe aren’t enough to lure them, surely the cheap drink deals will. Two stupid hours between 5 and 7 (cocktails ½ price, beers and mixed drinks £2) are followed by two more happy hours between 7 and 9 (cocktails from £3.5, house beer £2.5), and if you so please, six more happy hours after that (Thirst Bar is open until 3:00). Also check out discounts on wine and champagne.

Bring your dancing shoes and leave your requests at home. You’re in for good times.

“Well had not been to the venue before, went for a freinds birthday, door staff were cool especially the guy on the door Andy, very helpful, drinks are really good and cheap for the West End, if you like house music this is the place for you, the dance floor is intimate but very friendly, the crowd love their music and there is a real party vibe, didn't plan on staying but before we knew it the lights were on, that's always the sign of a good night out, oh and pulled, and Andy even organised us a taxi home, well done Thirst.”

“Booked some tables for my leaving do at Thirst... for free I might add. Half price cocktails really got the party going and a short stay after work turned into a 3 am finish! Great fun and wicked music. Great for meeting after work BUT beware the Thirst effect which means you stay out way too late!! Fabulous night out.”

“This place has gone down hill in a big way. They let way too many people in. I used to go here most weekends but wouldnt go back if you paid me. The bar staff seem look right through you when you're trying to get served. I complained to the doorman when a drunk guy smashed into our table and knocked all off our drink off the table. We had only just brought the round £40 plus and the doorman told me, i watch the door not clean up tables. When i mentioned that it was his job to sort drunk idiots he ignored me. We left straight after that. Just for the record i spoke with a doorman and asked him what the maximum number of people where allowed indoors and he said they never count and he's never been told too.”

“I booked an area 4 weeks in advance for my birthday and when we arrived i was told there had been a mix up and no area had been reserved for me, which was a real pain as there where about 14 of us. The barman told me he would sort out an area for us shortly. 8 of my friends couldnt get in the bar as it was so full. 1.5 hours later nothing had been sorted out. My partner was short changed by £10 when she got some drinks and when she complained she was told I DONT THINK SO!! after this incident we all left and found it hard to find anywhere decent for 14 people in Soho on a Saturday night. Completley ruined my night out. I wrote to the bar to express my dissapointment and still havent had a reply. Stay well clear!!”

“I booked thirst for my birthday and the whole thing was brilliant from start to finish. Excellent cocktails (half price during happy two hours), incredibly friendly helpful staff, decent little dance floor downstairs, good music and they had an area outside in the sunshine. It's independent, the staff really care about what they are doing and it's reasonably priced (for central London). I couldn't recommend this enough!”

“Great little bar in the heart of Soho. I reserved an area as it was my 40th birthday. The customer service you receive is fantastic from the moment you make your reservation online to the actual day of the party. Bar staff were friendly, warm and even introduced me to a few new shots! I have to say I was extremely well looked after and all my guests had a great time too. I will certainly recommend Thirst to my friends and will certainly use this bar again. A great little stop off after work for some well-earned cocktails.”

“I stumbled on the Thirst bar with my friend after a Xmas work do. It was absolutely brilliant, the bar staff were great, one in particular Sam! So friendly and makes amazing cocktails! Hope he gets paid well! I went again with another friend and again we had a great time, music is brilliant, people really friendly, I love it and I'm going again tonight, can't wait!”

“Perfect place for afterwork drinks, or later in the evening. The cocktails are superbly made, by some of the friendliest, most attentive bar staff I've encountered in London. Thirst is easily one of my top bars in London.”

“I totally disagree with Adam´s review. Thirst is an intimate club, playing fantastic house music, crowded yes, but surely thats a sign of a good venue? I´d much rather go somewhere with atmosphere and plenty of people having a good time than a crappy overpriced bar with 5 people in it. If you want a quiet drink without having to shout then don´t go to a club, find yourself a nice candlelit romantic bar where you can cosy up. I´ve been to Thirst many many times, always had a great night, and have never seen a fight. Besides, it´s central London with people drinking, what do you expect???? Yes bars and clubs come and go, but to the best of my knowledge Thirst has been banging out the tunes and serving the best cocktails in central london for a few years now - not the sign of a failing bar. Highly recommended to everyone, you´ll have a great night, and hopefully people like Adam won´t be there to spoil it!!!”

“Al might like to think that Ron's review is inaccurate but I too have been told by the doormen 'we've let too many in tonight'. It's not a case of being busy and loud, it's being so busy that fights or at least agro starts. Whilst I've been at Thirst this has happened precisely because too many people were in the venue. It's not a particularly aggressive atmosphere but when everyone is crushed and has no choice other than being in each other's faces then these things happen. On the night I was in there, it was extremely loud. It’s no use saying go back to the suburbs (other than being rude it doesn’t address the criticisms). I like a bar where you can speak without having to shout so loud in your mate’s face that you singe their eyebrows with your breath. And the drinks are over priced. They might be cheaper than other venues but that doesn’t mean Thirst is good value. It just means other places are bigger rip offs. The only consolation is that - as someone who’s been going out in Soho for years - I know these places come and go. They’re transient because most people only go once and the custom dries up. I was in a big party the last time I was in Thirst – it was a friend’s leaving do. I also met another party – everyone was slagging the place off. If you head to the suburbs, you might find a decent bar. I’d recommend it to anyone tempted to go to Thirst.”

“Just like to put Ron straight. At Thirst we never over fill the venue and suggesting we do implies we break the law and put our customers safety at risk. Thirst does not have fights. To busy and to loud seems to suggest Ron may in fact be too old. Stay in the suburbs and put your feet up! Look forward to seeing all our happy customers soon. Al Thompson”

“Avoid like Jeremy Clarkson on a weekend evening - the management fill the place far beyond its legal capacity and the constant barging through the crowds often leads to fighting. If you like sweating in an over-price, pretentious matchbox that plays crap music to goatee-bearded wankers, this is the bar for you. £3.50 for a beer - can you really justify spending that amount when there are children out there starving?”

“I went here for my birthday, as I wanted a place to dance to funky rockin tunes with a good atmosphere without being a massive club - loved it!! Absoloutely wicked place, wicked pumped up dj's without any attitude, friendly bar & door staff.”

“I went to Thirst for my wifes birthday. Great night from start to finish. Polite friendly courteous door staff - unbelievable in the West End. Pumping dance floor and fantastic cocktails and non-wallet busting prices. The missus even loved the toilet attendants selection of perfumes! We'll be back.”

“I decided to go to thirst for my birthday. After much polava getting on the guest list I was told that every person in my party was to bring confirmation. When we arrived we werent even asked for our names! its terribly small and was so packed I could not move ! I complained to the bouncers that this was dangerous and there should be a restriction. My friends all left as they felt so claustaphobic. This ruined my birthday and I would never go back and would advise any one strongly against visiting.”

“I turned up to Thirst saturday night around 12ish and was pleasantly surprised by cheap entry, polite door staff and great atmosphere. First imprssions: small and crouded but this soon levelled off and the night really began. The DJ''s had the tunes well under control- the sign stating "no requests" was justified by a great set. £3 a bottle of stella or JD/coke was pretty welcome considering the area and god only knows how, but the punters were the best behaved croud I''ve seen out in such a confined, (sorry- intimate) space! Over all impressions: top night and top venue, only hope it can remain this way!”

“Unbelieveable! Turned up randomly last Wednesday, and found a new night, Slide London. These boys really know their house music! The dancefloor was absolutely going off. I've been to Thirst before, its a wicked place, but this was something special. Awesome!”

“Went there on a Wednesday night (Step up Front) and was really impressed. Drinks were really cheap (Happy hour till 10, with cheap cocktails and beer). Great atmosphere, with a small bar upstairs and a bar and dancefloor downstairs. Music was fab - live djs playing a mix of hip hop with a mix of all types of music - but not too heavy. If you want somewhere to go late, the plcae stays open till 3 as well!!!!”

““Thirst” stands discretely on the corner of Greek St & Bateman St, given away only by the bold pink illuminated THIRST signs at the foot of its shop style windows. Inside, one could easily confuse Thirst with a Charlotte St art gallery, with more abstract illuminated wall signs detailing close ups of credit card brands (alongside a genuine cashpoint)! Contained on two and a half floors with minimalist 70s/80s décor, this convivial bar greatly benefits from being smaller than your average ‘bar-with-a-dance-floor’. The atmosphere is more personal and almost ‘family like’ with cheery, unimposing bar staff & bouncers and friendly late-twenty-something clientele. Ample seating upstairs and in the sub-level area, off the dance floor downstairs, provide a good springboard to the dance floor itself – where Thirst really pins its colours to the mast. The groove is mainly funky house with other beats on different nights. The DJs are magnificent, properly catered for by a purpose built DJ booth beneath yet another ironic illumination - No requests please. The drinks are priced under average for a Soho bar and the tardis like cloakroom is worth a punt. Entry is mostly free with a nominal charge later on some evenings. So far, Thirst has successfully managed to remain undiscovered by the suburban meat-market-merchants more commonly found boogieing at The Loop, On Anon and Tiger Tiger. We chanced upon this bar at Xmas, under a recommendation from the door staff at ‘Lab’ round the corner, who were closing up early and I can tell you, I haven’t looked back since. ”
