Tabun Kitchen Review

Top 10 things to know about Tabun Kitchen:

1) In Soho’s epicentre, between the indie record stores and anachronistic sex shops, the homely Tabun Kitchen is the answer on many post-work WhatsApp catch-up groups: “where shall we chat and eat in Zone 1?”

2) Equidistance from West End shows, Regent Street shopping, and Oxford Street pedestrian traffic jams, the restaurant’s preferential location is not the only reason to choose it as your next meeting point: the Palestinian tabun oven has been the centrepiece of dinner councils for aeons, bringing families and friends together to shoot the breeze.

3) The breeze here is flanked by a colourful interior. Clever minutiae - bright cushions, classy tiling, soothing plantlife, whicker lampshades - provide the calming aura much needed in this part of town.

4) Lovers take the window seat for people-watching. Comrades sit at the bar on high stools. Large parties sink into the booths. Everyone dives into interchangeable Palestinian comfort food; dipped, spread and eaten in a variety of ways. Recline with a big sigh, as though your mum gave you a big hug, on a Sunday.

5) Ignore the confusing Jerusalem taster menu, and order sharing mezze to start. Ask for toothpicks because roasted green wheat, parsley, and seeds will take residence in your grill.

6) Hummus is mandatory. Well, it should be.

7) A shared manaeesh - a Palestinian pizza - is the best way to experience the tabun oven’s raison d'être. No bigger than the 7-inch singles sold next door, it doesn’t rely on a classic tomato base, instead using lamb tahini, za’atar dried thyme, and shakshuka sauce.

8) Expect lots of red spice and fresh herbs, ideal if you’re suffering from last-night-itis. Depending on the depth of your hangover, the lamb makloubeh with thyme-grilled veggies, rice and pine nuts should ease you back to civility. If you’re a complete zombie, blow your head off with the fatet jaj shredded lemon chicken and sauteed garlic.

9) Although the food helps escapism flourish, the drinks are less placating. The plain wine list only affords decent wines by the bottle (not glass), and if you’re searching for the world’s spiciest, driest martini - maybe you, hangover boy! - then this is the place.

10) Tabun Kitchen’s mid-range price point and cosy-cum-modern charm has the feel of a restaurant that could easily scale in the posh food courts of Westfield shopping centre. Thankfully, for now, you only need meet in quiet (?!) Soho.
