If there’s one thing I can’t get enough of right now/ever – it’s Indian street food. @soho_wala is your go-to destination for shareable small plates or a quick weekday lunch. We started with a modern take on phulwadi, which to me are completely unrecognisable here. A cross between the traditional gram flour snack and a popadom, Wala go extra and toss theirs with truffle oil. Probably one of the most simplest of Indian dishes, but one which still manages to taste completely different no matter where you eat it, is the good old classic pani puri - SohoWala have this absolutely nailed, the harmonious balance between the tamarind, green chilli and mint is???? . . . #dinewithdipesh #sohowala #soho #courthousehotel #indianfood #streetfood #panipuri #bhel #citylife #london #foodpic #foodgasm #foodstagram #foodlover #foodstyling #photography #photooftheday #instafood #picoftheday #instamood #weekendvibes #sundayfunday

Top 10 things to know about Soho Wala:

1) For everyone who says the West End is filled with restaurant chains, there are the brave restaurants like Soho Wala that open to defy convention. How often do you find a leading hotel restaurant to be an Indian restaurant?

2) It might be situated on the shopping crossroads of Carnaby Street and Oxford Street, but you certainly get a taste of Mumbai thanks to the colourful scenes of India vividly adorning the walls. Multicoloured cushions and seating set the scene for a vibe that is more Bollywood than West End; although the one-minute stroll to The London Palladium makes it a prime pre-theatre dinner location.

3) The clientele here are more than just the usual clueless tourists in Soho, but actual local Londoners visiting the restaurant to find an alternative to the formulaic offerings nearby.

4) Dishes at Soho Wala are extremely wallet-friendly with starters all under £5 and main courses mostly under £10. Although, do check with the waiters on portion sizes as that can be variable. The main course of prawn balchao was served with five small prawns which would be more fitting of a starter portion.

5) Mirchi matchstick chicken, essentially fried chicken, was quaintly presented inside a mini-bullock cart and filled with an explosion of exotic flavours thanks to the presence of green chilli, lime, and ginger.

6) Papdi chaat was a deceptively simple dish to make but the varying components combined exceptionally well to offer a pleasing variation in textures and tastes with the use of sweet yoghurt, mint, tamarind and wheat crisps.

7) Whilst the prawns might be poor value, the same cannot be said of the paneer chilli fry which was around 1/4 less in terms of price and 1/4 more in terms of quantity. It also came with a healthy dose of peppers, onions and chilli tossed in with the paneer.

8) Drinks offerings did lack the Indian charm of the decor. Where you might be hoping for cocktails using Indian spices, the only thing you can find which originated from the sub-continent is mango lassi.

9) For dessert, on the other hand, there was an impressive list of clever creations such as Assam tea brûlée and sweet Indian pretzel in a waffle served with vanilla ice cream.

10) Whilst the Jamie's of this world are closing down on the high street, it shows there is still room for growth in the West End if you are willing to offer exciting alternatives such as Soho Wala.
