Shoryu Carnaby Review

Book a table at Shoryu Carnaby

Top 10 things you need to know about Shoryu Ramen restaurant:

1) Beautiful, trendy, upbeat location for a decent ramen soup: the entrance is on Carnaby Street - literally at the door step of the famous Dr. Martin’s shoes shop - in Kingly Court. There are two other locations; one in Soho and one on Regent Street. It’s a small restaurant, with Japanese flags hanging at the door, forcing you to bow. I don’t know if this is intentional but it’s definitely noticeable;

2) Inside the ambience is simple: full view kitchen and bar, birch veneer benches and high tables with chairs, a gong by the door. The chandeliers look like skilfully wrapped presents, paper lanterns are frequent and the menu is presented as a notebook on very simple white paper; minimalist and positively different;

3) Wonderful manager: passionate and knowledgeable. The staff are ready, courteous, providing a top notch service. Only one waiter is Japanese, though, and so is the head chef, thankfully;

4) It is imperative to try their Kirin Nama beer (they rigorously only serve Japanese beer) served with frozen (yes, you read it right) foam: lovely and refreshing. I loved it;

5) Their best dish all is the immaculate white soft Hirata buns. They come filled with veggies and various types of meat. I found them terrific and really regret having had only the one!

6) The manager reassures me that their ingredients are premium. All rice is 100% organic, their oil is GM free and they only serve yellow fin tuna;

7) The restaurant is famous for their ramen served in pork broth with BBQ pork, egg, mushrooms, black garlic oil (they do have vegetarian options). I sampled their original ramen dish: Shoryu Ganso Tonkotsu. It was definitely filling and abundant but a bit flat!

8) Ramen is served in four types: original hosomen, original matcha hosomen (mixed with green tea), tick futomen and rice noodles. They don’t lack variety. The menu lists about 15 or more different types of ramen soups.

9) If you really want a pleasant surprise, go for their desserts: their sesame ice cream and yuzu rolled cake are amazing. The cake is made with green tea: the first slimming dessert I’ve ever had!

10) Overall, a nice evening, in a 5-star location, where the food, although enjoyable, is not the main reason you’d be going out.
