Ping Pong Great Marlborough Place Review

Top 10 things to know about Ping Pong Soho:

1) Fast-paced service, upbeat music and quick table turnaround make this modern dim sum restaurant well-suited to its bouncy name.

2) Located just off Carnaby Street and with a great-value menu, Ping Pong Soho makes a lively stop off for groups of friends getting together before a night out in Central London, nearby office workers looking for a 30-minute lunch, or Oxford Street shoppers refuelling between sprees.

3) The speciality? Dim sum, cocktails and Chinese tea, all served up in a sleek, dark decor.

4) To kick things off, you’ll find a menu of sweet and refreshing cocktails with Asian flair: watch an iced hibiscus flower open up in your Hibiscus Spritz, munch on the kumquats bobbing up and down in your Kumquat Mojito, and enjoy hints of lychee and ginger in many of the mixes.

5) Time for dim sum, the tapas of the Far East. Fried, grilled, baked or steamed, tick off your favourite dishes on your paper menu (three or four per person should be plenty), before handing it over to one of the headset-wearing waiters dashing past.

6) There are the classics (prawn crackers, vegetable spring rolls and beef dumplings); the healthier options (purple power salads, Thai-style wonton soups and green juice sorbet); and the more quirky (black prawn dumplings and crispy duck spring rolls - like a crispy duck pancake, but ready-made and fried).

7) Mix, match, dip, pick, swap, reach over and share, as you manoeuvre around the colourful small plates, towers of steaming dumpling baskets and numerous dipping sauces scattered across your table.

8) Even after too many dim sum, there’s always space for a refreshing mochi: a cute little ball of rice pastry filled with ice cream, best enjoyed with a flowering, herbal or black tea to finish.

9) As well as sharing food with friends, you might end up sharing a chat with the person perched next to you at one of the upstairs bars overlooking the open dumpling kitchen or the tables on the lower level. Downstairs, big round tables lend themselves well to birthday parties or family groups wishing to linger around the dinner table.

10) And you’ll never be too far from more dim sum in London, as sister restaurants are located across London, from Wembley to Westfield via the South Bank.

“A really cool place mixing authentic dim sum with smart and modern interior design. Fresh and flavoursome food of high quality which is never reflected in the price, cocktails and flowering teas to amaze, decent service and a wonderful, laid back atmosphere. Everything you could ask for in a restaurant!!”

“Again I was very pleased with the whole experience at Ping Pong. Exceptional value for money and authentic, delicious dim-sum. Very packed and so service was a little slower than my last visit, but this was a Saturday night. Good stuff!”

“Ping Pong never disappoints. This was my 3rd visit in as many months and so decided it was worth mentioning. Even as a fussy vegetarian, it seems that there is always something new and exciting to try, and the portions seem to be just the right amount. Although the cocktails are slightly expensive compared to the food, they are, nonetheless, quite delicious. Finally, the bill for two of us, worked out to a little over £40 - bargain!”

“One tiny complaint about this fantastic little place and that is that although the seating fits in wonderfully with the rest of the decor, I always find it pretty uncomfortable! Don't let that put you off however, the good points more than make up for that. The food is delightful and is displayed wonderfully in little dishes and baskets. Drinks are original and quite spectacular looking and well worth the £6 odd which really is no more than you'd pay anywhere else in London. The service I have experienced has always been good and the restaurant itself has a nice cosy feel. Easy going atmosphere, never feel hurried, surprisingly good value for money. Well done!”

“Good things about Ping Pong - good service with helpful staff, no booking required, stylish modern decor, delicious and imaginative drinks and cocktails, wonderful menu with so much to choose from, great atmosphere, good bar area, very affordable. Bad things about Ping Pong - none that I can think of!”

“My experience at this restaurant from start to finish was fantastic - the decor is gorgeous, I would reccomend either sitting at the bar where there is a chef at work or downstairs where there is a stunning water feature! The environment is so relaxed and the food is yummy! To top it off the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the prices affordable. Apparantly they now offer takeaway so that will definitely be on my speed dial!”

“Ping Pong is a refreshing change to other designer-chic restaurants where you pay through the nose. Stylish surroundings, delicious dim sum - a wider selection than I thought possible - attentive staff, and a very reasonable bill. I happily recommend it.”
