O'Neill's Review

In some ways returning from a night out at the pub with nothing to report is quite a good thing. Rarely does the grub serve as anything more than fuel to keep you going through the evening. The pies are often microwaved, the burgers occasionally cold, the chips nearly always overpriced. So when you’ve just nipped to your local for some victuals and a couple of pints, you may not wander home extolling the virtues of the chef but the fact that he kept a clean sheet is good enough.

I didn’t have much to report after my night at O’Neills, Wardour Street. There are plenty of Irish pubs in London, and more than enough of them serve ale and pies. O’Neills does exactly what it says on the tin, serving Irish-inspired dishes at completely reasonable prices, quickly, and with a hint of Irish good humour (nicely done from a waiter of Far Eastern rather than Celtic extraction).

As one O’Neills is much like the next, what often sets them apart is the decor, the location and the music. Wardour Street spreads out over three floors offering a better chance at getting a seat than the Sam Smith’s round the corner. At the very top is an unpleasantly prisonesque ‘roof terrace’ where smokers can indulge their lung destruction in the peace of London’s skyline, surrounded by blue-painted picket fences and heaters that periodically turn themselves off.

As a two-cheese cheeseburger and mixed grill winged their way over to our table, we supped on a not-so-overpriced and rather delicious Rioja waiting to chow down on our chunky chips and the variety of animal products. My two cheeses were nice and cheesy, the grills were all well cooked. Good value, hearty pub fare.

After indulging our red blood cells, we changed floors (because we could) and discovered live bands grace the place six nights a week. Apparently, we had hit the one night without this week, though, and resorted to being mildly entertained by some unobtrusive classics on the sound system.

It’s a nice little break from the hectic tourist-flavoured Soho and crazed shoppers outside but there’s not a lot to write home about. Not that that’s a bad thing. more

“We went here on a visit to London and found it to be a fantastic place, great live music upstairs. Sure it was a bit crowded but that's atmosphere. Apart from being the only real Irish people in a Irish bar it was great. I'll defo go back.”

“Hard to beat this spot for totty. All of which is full of the bull. I should know. Spent most of my working time here not to mention any money i earnt. Watch out for the squaddies though them bastards would pick a fight in an empty room. But sure in true Irish fashion so would most paddies. Quote of the day: If my grannie had balls she would be my granda.”

“I've been to this O'Neils three times and have had a great time on each occasion. Aside from having to pay £8 to get in (a bit much?) I'd recommend to anyone who has not gone already to go - you will have a really good night. And it is full of blokes which is great for girls - just not the other way round.”

“Yes, its true the the bouncers are true w@nkers - good points though - its HUGE and has a great atmosphere, free club if you get there before about 9.00 - bad points, its generally 80% blokes on a saturday night, with groups large groups of Chech workmen and Aussies all looking for a shag.”

“If a good Saturday night involves: queuing for 20 minutes in single file whilst constantly fighting to keep your place in the queue, followed by paying £8 to be jammed into a bar like sardines in a manner that is surely illegal, having amourous couples snogging under your armpits, beer being regularly spilt down your back/arms/legs or in fact any part of your body, avoiding the damage caused from the frequent fights and my old favourite - the elbow dance then this surely is this place for you. If not then avoid at all cost. An expensive and nasty venue!”

“Bouncers unceremonously ruined the night, when one inparticular (number 8308/4) or twat as he must be know to his mates decided to pick a fight with a friend of mine. For absolutely no reason. Avoid this place at all costs”
