Moonlighting Club Review

As you first walk down the cheap carpeted steps, surrounded by mono pigmented Christmas lights and frisked by an undesirable, Moonlighting is not appealing. Stick with it. Inside this grubby looking club you will find a plethora of easy going youngsters with a huge appetite for fun…and booze.

Legendary night is ‘Cheapskates’ on a Wednesday, 60p for a shot and mixer. Do not be deluded; just because this doesn’t tempt the media darlings of this world, it doesn’t mean the music and the fashion are not at the cutting edge of cool. Lots of fun.

NB Admission: Wed £6 or £4 with NUS, Fri / Sat £10.
Music: Indie / Rock / R&B / Oldies / D&B/ Soul / Hip hop
Dress code – none but are very strict with I.D

“Bouncers were a little pushy with us as there was a big group, but once we got in the place it was great! One of the best mixes of music I've experienced in london and, though a small dancefloor, that added to the fun a little as it forced everyone to dance more or less together by the end of the night! A good night all in all!”

“I went to cheapskates last night (20th august)... I think it's great the drinks are so cheap £1 for a bottle of carlsberg and 80p for a spirits... The bouncers were really friendly and helped when my friend lost her ticket for the cloakroom... and i lost my purse and it was handed in (with everything inside!) The only bad thing is the smoking it's ridiculous when it gets busy you have a 5 minute smoking allowence and then a whistle is blown by a lady a like 2 call madame whiplash... you are also forced 2 be seated whilst smoking! Apart from that cheap and very chearful night out!”

“I went to cheapskates last night (12th March) and spent the entire night being told what to do in a military fashion. I wasn't allowed to keep my jacket on and was forced to pay to put it in the cloakroom. A couple of drinks into the night i politely asked the barman who had just served me how much my round cost and that apparently insulted him. He began to shout 'you know how much it is' and then waved his hand in my face so that i could give him the money. The night got even better when i went to the smoking section with a friend and was told i could not smoke my cigarette standing up and was forced to sit. As soon as i was done with my cigarette i was told to leave the smoking section despite the fact that my friend was still smoking. Last night was definitely the most ridiculous night ive had in London in a long time. hopefully next weeks cheapskates will be better (yeah right). I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.”

“I went there with two mates and found that the bouncers were nice and even reminded us it was student night so we were able to get in for cheaper. the club it'self is alright and there is a nice seated area. The drinks are dirt cheap so spending a lot is quite hard to do at 80p for vodka & coke. All in all i intend to head back there again. Only problem would be the small dancefloor.”

“Be careful of cheapskates. We went in a group of maybe 10 friends last night - my boyfriend came to meet us later on his own. He was stopped at the door - asked whether he was gay or straight, then asked to step aside and wait for 30minutes or so. When he was finally let in he was charged £10, and humiliated in front of other clubbers when a doorman screamed out 'this one's a gay' to everyone and then proceeded to ask whether he was male or female. At the end of the night when we politely asked if there was someone we could report this to - we were basically shouted down and told to get own. And all this in soho... nice”

“Once inside, especially on a wednesday night - cheapskates, usually a good night. However from experience, the bouncers aren't too bright, and will quite happily turn down clientelle if they possess a Y chromosome. In other words, if a large group of lads want to get in, at least split up along the queue. Its rather fustrating waiting an hour while the bouncer figures out how to use his clicker, then getting turned away because of the high boy girl ratio. Then theres that little chinese bloke who literally holds a magnifying glass to id, for every single person, so make sure you have some. If the picture is old he will even question it, so its a good idea to have some backup of your credentials, if the picture doesn't look like you. Once passed the door, ignoring the sticky and leopard skin interior, the atmosphere is wicked, the booze is flowing, and the music is cool. Just get there early, bring id (with photo), and if a large group, split up into 3 or 4 along the queue, and don't try and be smart with the bouncers, they aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, just let them have that feeling of power for those 5 hours of the night. Aside from those few niggles, once in, its always a laugh. (BTW, I'm not bitter....)”

“Yeah yeah yeah its easy to pick holes in Cheapskates, but the thing is, everyone is there to rock. And despite playing some cheesy things, the DJs can mix like maniacs between genres. The biggest problem is that they sometimes play the same tunes 3 times in a night.”

“Just to clarify Tim's statement that they "are very strict with I.D", *all* clubbers require photo ID (such as driving licence or passport), regardless of age - even a respectable, non-threatening couple, aged 30 and 27, weren't allowed in without photo ID! It is also worth noting that the bouncers were quite rude, not particularly bright, and almost didn't let a group of students in, despite having photo ID, because one of them was Australian!”

"I found Majingos again... I used to go here when it was based at South Quay in Canary Wharf and has now relocated to Limehouse E14 in case anyone doesn't know. It was good in the old days and I am pleased..." Which venue is this?

"Very bad experience. Booked a table, before paying making sure that the table will not be moved at some point to make space. Looks like the woman taking bookings called Candice will promise you anything..." Which venue is this?
