Lyric Tavern Review

Lyric Tavern is featured in these Guides:

Closed briefly the Lyric is now open again.

The Lyric is a traditional boozer tucked away down Great Windmill Street just off Shaftesbury Avenue. Although tiny there seems to be enough space to squeeze yourself in and enjoy a good pint, take your choice from amongst others: larger, courage best, directors and london pride.

With small tv's showing terrestrial channels, it's not a bad place to watch the footy (that is the games that haven't been swallowed up by sky).

Punters range from tourists in need of an alcoholic break from rushing round London, theatre goers and regulars all adding to one of the main attractions of the Lyric - the atmosphere.

The Lyric is not a destination venue by any means but well worth a look in if you're out and about central London in need of refreshment in a cozy traditional pub - you could pop in for one and easily spend the rest of the day boozing it up. We did...

“Just read Harry Morris 's review and hope he sees this as my dad was Albert's uncle. We stayed with him and Bridget in the pub in 1962. I recently revisited and it is still a great traditional pub. Harry if you see this please get in touch. Edna”

“My father in law Albert Hitchin took over the lyric in 1947 to 1987. And Bridget his wife started the food service in the 50's. It was the local pub for all the Soho regulars and artists including the Windmill all the great stars came in at some times, could write a book about those times. Bridget is still with us in her mid Ninetys living in a home nr Ditchling.”

“I have given 5 stars to all categories as I was fortunate to work as a barman at the Lyric in 1967/68 - best era to be in London. I lived on the premises which was run by the Hitchen family. Great roast dinners every day and met alot of the cast performing at the nearby theatres. Back then, the Windmill Cinema (which was opposite) was screening In The Heat of the Night and my wife of 37 years was the cashier there. We didn't meet though until early 1969. I must add I was on a working holiday in the UK and so was my wife and have been back to London 4 times since departing there in 1973 for Sydney. Things have changed quite alot, but still love the city and the people. Both our daughters worked in London and visited this great little pub, but I am sure they didn't experience the atmosphere that I did back in the great era of Swinging London.”

“The review above suggests that the Lyric Tavern is not a destination pub, but I disagree... It's not very often that you get a pub in Soho that has that welcoming local feel. We went out of our way today to have a Sunday roast there, having eaten there before, we knew the food was good. As Always the service was prompt, friendly and not overly priced. I'd say the best two things about this place is the friendly staff and the lovely food! BIG thumbs up!”

“The Lyric was the best pub in London, when I lived there many's a 'lost weekend' was spent having the craic, talking to Ritchie and the other staff. Getting back from the toilet was like scaling the Eiger (after several pints). All sorts mixing, from young lads to tuxedo and black dress wearing theatre goers. A great loss to the city!!”

“Proposed to my wife in the Lyric (I know, how romantic am I!). Lovely pub and absolutely gutted that it has closed, hope it comes back soon.”

“Famous for a great pint of Guinness and having the wittiest and rudest manager in Christendom - making Norman in The Coach & Horses look like an amateur. They have their own parliament of regulars who really should be running the country. Not a place for the thin skinned or the easily offended. Nevertheless it is the best pub in Soho.”

“Thought the review of The Lyric was spot on... would just like to add that it's a great place for watching the famous Glasgow Celtic whenever there's a live match on telly, even on nights when every other bar in Central London seems to be showing Man Utd, Chelski, or the Arse..”

"Very bad experience. Booked a table, before paying making sure that the table will not be moved at some point to make space. Looks like the woman taking bookings called Candice will promise you anything..." Which venue is this?
