L'Escargot Review

L'Escargot is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things you need to know about L'Escargot restaurant:

1) Buried deep in Soho, an impenetrable wall surrounds L'Escargot, protecting it against the chant, “out with the old, in with the new” which infiltrates the rest of the area.

2) Because this is the oldest French restaurant in London (opening in 1927), and the Georgian townhouse in which it’s situated has even longer roots.

3) And they know Old School - this is the Mafia of restaurants. There are rules: from being greeted at the door (coats and berets checked); to having your chair extended before being seated; napkin placed flawlessly on your lap; and water poured discreetly by almost ghost-like staff.

4) You’ll find the restaurant is a living eulogy to the glamour of the past. Chandeliers dominate the room, dipped low enough to allow the light from the taper candles - which rest in candle holders more precious than anything you’ll ever inherit - to dance across white tablecloths and cause shadows to run up the heavy drapes.

5) For those on a date, opt for the brocade armchairs, positioned closely together allowing for intimate conversations and meaningful glances. This could be one of London most romantic restaurants.

6) Arrive early and the soundtrack to your evening will be gentle jazz. Stave off your hunger for a few hours and your reward will be a live pianist.

7) Both the restaurant’s feet are planted firmly in the conventional; in terms of its look, its attitude, its traditions of service, and in its menu. Kick things off with the chilli crab salad, the use of punchy dark crab meat balances the spice of the chilli.

8) But main course is where L'Escargot shines. They know the importance of getting the classics right, and a perfect entrecôte steak with creamy dauphinoise is a good call. The stone bass with shrimp and samphire is cooked in such a rich butter sauce your arteries might curse but you won’t hear over the applauds from your taste buds.

9) A 20-minute wait for the Grand Marnier soufflé allows time for the preceding course to settle, and its Everest-like rise is well worth the wait.

10) In a time where everyone in Soho is trying to be the newest thing, L'Escargot is refreshingly old, paying homage to a traditional scene, which was, and still is, so good it should never cease to exist.

“We came for our daughter''s 21st and from the moment we made the original booking we had brilliant service. The decor in the (cheaper) downstairs restaurant is 1930s gorgeous (the ladies loo included) and the atmosphere at dinner very special. Numerous waiters, all looking like they''re enjoying themselves, and really delicious food eg. blinis of smoked salmon and fromage frais with herbs, poulet de landes en cocotte - 3 courses for £26.50 from a Marco Pierre White-trained chef is v.g. value. House wines are excellent and well priced. A great location too - the taxi ride though Soho on a Saturday night was an adventure in itself.”

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
