Imli Street Review

Imli Street is featured in these Guides:

Best for: Indian street food in a New York setting.

Great: sharing tapas; diversity for non-Indian loving diners; stylish décor.

Pssst you, yes you, are you a betting man? I bet I can take you from these here London streets to New York, India and China in less than 3 hours. And no, I’ve not ‘missed my meds’ today.

If I win, you front the cost of our adventure. If I lose, you can have me committed. My straightjacket-wearing days are inevitable, huh? Splendid smack talk, sir; then the bet is on!

You should refrain from your laughter, though, you’ve not won yet. Yes, outside looking in at Imli Street restaurant we are most certainly still in Soho London, but follow me through this door and…

New York! While noise no longer expels from your mouth, you should certainly think about closing that open jaw per chance the wind should change direction. Observe the exposed brick walls, the low-hanging aluminium lamps and silver air vents running the length of the ceiling so large you could play a game of Laser Quest within them. The Statue of Liberty, yellow cabs and hotdogs are no more New York than this.

It’s curious how outside it still appears to be London, and yet here we are in New York. It’s best not to vex yourself with perplexing questions. Relax your mind and sip your Tulsitini cocktail instead.

Here in this Tribeca style warehouse, blending clear vodka nectar with ginger liqueur, apple and basil proves an amicable occasion for your taste buds; downright affable, even. Things are different this side of the pond, the exceptionally good bar tenders are partially reason for that, and at only £7.50 – we forgot to change our sterling to dollars before leaving - these cocktails certainly don’t compromise quality for the purpose of price.

Quickly, log on to the free wi-fi here and share with those back home the news about the best cocktails in New York (London)!

I trust you’ll agree I win the first part of our bet? Then let us continue, then; this way beyond the island bar and the wire cages imprisoning bottles of wine…

To India. I see your nose twitching excitedly as a breeze of spice journeys under your snout, your sense of smell nodding confirmation of your whereabouts.

Listen and you shall hear the yells of cart vendors selling street food, the squawk of ‘Tangdi Kabab’ and ‘Roti Kabab’ – melt-off-the-bone chicken drumstick kababs and tender Tandoori lamb chunks packed with flavour and a punch of heat – and the excited babble of a crowded Saturday night. It’s too loud to pinpoint only one sound; instead, a harmony, reverberating as a comforting melody. India is lively and atmospheric, just as you suspected it might be, just as you hoped it would be.

Onwards now and, if you like, we can make a pit-stop at India’s coastal shack shores. Heat is not from the sun but from the tiger prawns coated in ginger and pepper and I agree, the crispy Goan squid is so fresh you can practically taste the sea. Even if you don’t usually like squid, in this instance, you believe you could live your life eating nothing else.

Vodka in New York and now squid in India; this trip through Imli Street is throwing more than a few surprises your way.

Try my perfectly crispy (but not greasy) onion bhaji bits; don’t be shy put your exemplifiable British manners aside. Here Indian-style tapas is meant to be shared, what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is soon most certainly to be mine; I’ve taken you to India, as I said I would. Let’s be off, we have one more stop to make…

In China. What do you mean you don’t think this is China? We are beyond borders! Yes, I see the London types with their Soho hair and their skinny east London jeans and while I grant you, there are many British accents to be overheard, surely they are all tourists. Look at their carefree faces, no Londoner looks like that unless on vacation. And if that wasn’t proof enough, what of this sticky-sauced chilli chicken and egg fried rice we are rapidly consuming with zealous enjoyment? Clearly Chinese fare.

I am relieved you concur, friend. Unfortunately for you this means you lose our little bet and the question of my sanity remains beyond reproach. As you discovered - through sights, sounds, smells and tastes - Imli Street restaurant in Soho takes you on a journey, and once you’ve walked through its front door all bets are off (or on, if you enjoy losing). more

“I was very impressed with Imli. Attending a huge dinner party of about 30 people, the service was really outstanding. I have attended functions like this before where service is appalling, and very slow. Not Imli. They had obviously planned for our party and had a strategy. Food and drinks were delivered in a very timely manner and they even knew exactly who had ordered what! I was quite astounded, as so many restaurants are useless at this. The food is a little on the pricey side, admittedly, but it is good and the night was a great success. And for this, I am prepared to pay. Well done Imli!”

“Good, different food but the restaurant could be more up to it!”

“Imli has a great concept to change the way you eat Indian food. Gone are the days where you order a curry and fill up on rice & naan. At Imli they've taken the tapas from the Spanish and offer a range of dishes with great flavours and an array of colours. Make sure you're hungry when you go if you take up the waiters suggestion of 6 tapas dishes to share between 2. Need to work on their cocktails but the staff were friendly & attentive. Little bit pricey but then you get that in Soho. Sit in the front section so you avoid the crashing dishes and watching your curry vibrate off the table.”

“The novelty of eating Indian tapas wears thin soon after the bill arrives. Sure, this restaurant is in Soho, but there's not much glitz and glamour. The food is of a fairly high standard, but doesn't beat what's available in Tooting for half the price. Tip: sit near the front if you are going to give it a whirl, better for people watching.”

“Went for a meal last Friday and had a great time. Service at Imli was relaxed, very friendly and the food was so different to any other Indian. Tapas idea is great and works really well. My new regular.”

“Imli is great with little tasty dishes that are fun and different from any other Indian restaurant. Well worth visiting again and again.”

"Hi guys, I come here with my friends and have very good time. I like your place very much and is very good times. I come back when I can soon. Thank you very much." Which venue is this?

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
