Hi Sushi Review

An all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant – the mere mention felt like heaven. But as I walked with my friend – another sushi fanatic – into the depths of Soho I felt sure that there was a catch.

My last two eating-out experiences in the area had not been good. So I was dubious as we were taken downstairs into a tiny eating area, where people (many of whom were Japanese – always a good sign) were perched on cushions on the floor, legs underground, beneath the oval tables. This, my friend told me, is how they sit to eat in Japan.

A smiling waitress handed us a paper menu, and we were instructed to tick what we wanted. Salmon sashimi, avocado rolls, salmon nigiri were just a few of the foods offered on the cold menu. On the hot; miso soup, prawn tempura and chicken teriyaki we enthusiastically ticked.

The food arrived promptly – and copiously. All-you-can-eat really was what it implied. And as we ordered our third helpings, varying it a bit with crab rolls and grilled squid, I was convinced. In fact, I was bowled over. Before this night I had never left a sushi restaurant feeling full. In Hi Sushi £13.50 grants the right to as much sushi as you desire.

The restaurant décor may not be as swanky as that of Itsu or Yo! Sushi, but the fish is fresh and the food is clean. The waiters are charming and the price – to think of no better word – a bargain.

So if you can bear to lower yourself onto a cushion on the floor, it is definitely worth switching from what you know and feasting at Hi Sushi. more

“Was there last night with two friends. We were waiting about 15min for our table, our fault though, since we were late for our reservation. service started quickly after we were seated next to a group of 5. The shared tables can be very cozy, but I we were fine with that and it was actually quite funny to laugh about your table neighbours jokes and vice versa. However, I would not recommend going there for a nice and quite dinner. Sushi is mainly Salmon based and quality is average but definitly okay given the price. Service is quick and efficient, but against the experience of other users we didn't find it unfriendly or rude at all. Even though it was packed and they were pretty busy they devoted enough time to answer our questions concerning the order process and the non sushi food. If you're in it for cheap and okay Sushi and don't mind sharing tables with strangers, I think this is quite a decent place to go. Don't go if you are looking for high quality sushi or a classy dining experience. I will go again.”

“rude, didn't get to try the food, wouldn't give the staff the satisfaction of even serving me! Picked up my bags and spent my £40 down the road.”

“I love Hi Sushi! The only thing that is weird is that the table - although booked is only held of 5 mins. So you have to be bang on time with arrivals etc. The food is ace and plentyful so you will not be disappointed! I really recommend this fab little restaurant! I have introduced many people over time and keep a regular apperance there!”

“We are Sushi freaks. Addicted in the worst possible way. We lived in the West coast of Canada for a long time where sushi is some of the best in the world and cheap. When we got to London to live we went into a major depression. The Sushi here is expensive and dull. We would go spend a fortune in sushi places and feel terrible at spending so much money and still came home hungry. Then we found this place. Its basic, but for those who just have to have that raw salmon fix then go here. You can pig out and the addiction is fixed for a few weeks! GREAT value for money, dont expect a fancy night out.”

“Food was great for the money, venue small but fun in the best tradition of soho eateries. Brill to go to Hi Sushi and scoff with your mates!!”

“Went for the buffet and found the quality to be awful. The fried food was all tasteless and designed solely to fill you up so that you can't eat as much sushi. The sushi was the worst I have ever had, almost completely salmon based and with all the rolls containing more rice then any others I have had. Even the seaweed wrapping was chewy. The atmosphere downstairs is poor, nothing like it looks in the photos. You are sandwiched between the kitchen and what appears to be the bin area. The only plus side of this place is the huge amount of food you are given. Nearly all of it went to waste however. The worst sushi restaurant I have even been to. Avoid!”

“I had been looking for an all-you-can-eat-sushi place in London for some time now, as the last time I ate sushi it set me back over £40, personally more than I would like to spend on a plate of raw fish for lunch. I was very excited to hear about Hi Sushi and their all-you-can-eat offer, and a couple of days ago I set off down to Frith St. in Soho to eat sushi and hopefully for the first time in my life feel full after eating. I arrived at the restaurant at 4pm, only to be greeted with a polite reminder that the buffet offer didn’t start until 5.30pm. I was too hungry to go home, so I killed an hour and a half in Soho, a feat more difficult than you can imagine as a) I was very, very hungry, and b) it was raining like it was judgment day and my shoes and socks and feet were completely soaked by the time I returned to Hi Sushi. So if you do fancy all-you-can-eat-sushi, make sure you arrive after 5.30pm on weekdays, and after 12.30pm on Saturdays. The restaurant is small and plainly decorated. Upstairs are a few high tables with fixed stools, and downstairs you sit on cushions on the floor. I was dining alone, so I sat upstairs. I’m not sure how much sitting on cushions is my thing anyway! I was given two sheets of paper, one for an assortment of salmon based sushi (and some vegetarian options), and one sheet for a variety of fried hot foods. The sushi is unlimited but the fried options were not, and you can only order from the fried menu once. There were about 12 choices”
