Dehesa Review

Book a table at Dehesa

In a society where everything appears to be speeding up, grabbing a quick bite is more popular than ever with Londoners. One of the ways this has manifested itself is in the tasty and easy-to-consume simplicity of tapas.

Dehasa, nestled between Regent Street and Carnaby Street with funky and modern yet comfortable surroundings, takes the Spanish savoury dishes experience a step further by offering them in partnership with charcuterie from both Spain and Italy. The menu has a range of tempting options to satisfy everyone from those after a light bite to diners in search of a more wholesome meal. If you’re after a nibble then look no further than the delicious marinated olives or the luxuriously fluffy quail’s eggs. The sourdough bread, meanwhile, came in generous chunks and was excellent dipped in creamy aioli. As for the tapas, the range is artfully presented and comes with old favourites such as the potato-packed classic tortilla as well as meat, fish and vegetable options you wouldn’t see on just any tapas menu.

In terms of highlights, the chorizo à la plancha packed a beautifully meaty and tangy punch while one of the stand out fish tapas options was a chargrilled tuna steak cooked to perfection with a potato, fennel and olive accompaniment. It’s worth keeping a close eye out for specials too: I tried the spinach and ricotta gnocchi with sage butter and was impressed by how a few bites that seemed so small could have such an enjoyable, rich and indulgent flavour.

An all-round pleasant atmosphere was enhanced further by attentive and genuinely friendly service. If you want to get a taste of some of the tastiest southern European delicacies, it turns out you’ve only got to pop round behind Hamleys and visit this little treasure.

Food

Dehesa offers an imaginative menu of small dishes designed for sharing. The food is inspired by Spain and Italy, which means the flavours are unfussy and bold. The emphasis is placed on the quality of the product and the marrying of two or three flavours. Dehesa specialize in charcuterie ranging from the famous acorn fed Jamón Ibérico from Spain to their own house cured duck breast. They have a particularly strong choice of vegetarian dishes including their signature dish: courgette flowers stuffed with goats-cheese and drizzled with honey. Their menu changes both seasonally and as they get inspired by new ideas!

Drinks

The wine list at Dehesa is exclusively Spanish and Italian and is designed to showcase the delicious indigenous grape varieties of these two countries. The list ranges from award-winning well-known producers to more obscure wines from smaller up and coming vineyards. There is also an extensive selection of fine and rare wines from Spain and Italy’s most esteemed producers. They also offer a carefully selected range of eight sherries, a choice of Bellinis, expertly made martinis, and a large selection of Spanish brandies and Scotch whiskys.

Dehesa has a beautiful private dining room available for groups of up to twelve. It boasts a thick oak table, bespoke wallpaper, a retro Murano glass chandelier and glass doors opening onto the wine cellar. Guests will have their own waiter for their party and can bring along their i-pod if they wish to personalise the music. Your party can either go a la carte or choose from their banquet style menu. Their managers will be happy to help you plan your party and choose suitable wine for the event. Please note there is a minimum spend (excluding service) on food and wine of £350 at lunchtime and £500 in the evenings. For further enquiries please email or call the restaurant.

Dehesa also uses the space to carry out a programme of wine tasting evenings organised by their sommelier Rebekah McKevitt. These generally last two hours on a Monday or Tuesday night in which Becky will lead you though a selection of wines with some charcuterie, cheese and nibble to share. Afterwards you can eat upstairs in the restaurant or indeed in the private dining room with your fellow tastees.
