Basement Sate Review

Book a table at Basement Sate

Top 10 things you need to know about Basement Sate cocktail bar:

1) Basement State is so Soho. Trendy neighbours…tick (cronut seller, artisan chocolatier, old-skool record store). Erotic neighbours…tick (lingerie boutique). Hidden entrance…tick (look for the red doors). Nod to the sex industry…tick (you can’t miss the sign: “This is not a brothel. There are no prostitutes at this address”).

2) Bare brick walls are still in. And they are completely bare here. A little austere, but it’s a constant reminder that you are actually in a basement.

3) This is definitely a place to woo your female companion on a first date. With low-key lighting, two-seater leather sofas, creative cocktails and fancy desserts she’ll be putty in your hands in no time. “You have the last bite.” “No, you…”

4) …Alternatively, take your mistress. The banquettes with dark wood partitions are perfect for an illicit drink and seductively feeding each other chocolatey desserts in the dim light.

5) The layout is great for people-watching with sofas dotted around the periphery; as long as there are actually people worth watching. Otherwise, it has a slight feel of an old people’s home for the mid-twentysomethings.

6) Trust the staff. Pierre, our waiter, went through the menu like a seasoned sommelier advising on the best cocktail and dessert matches. He knows his stuff.

7) He was right. The sharpness of the blueberry vinegar in my Thunder Cloud cocktail (which also contains Aperol, lemonade and tequila) balanced perfectly with the sweetness and nuttiness of the Green Forest dessert – a dainty slice of black cherry, pistachio and strawberries. However, my companion’s Jessica Rabbit (carrot juice, elderflower, gin and golden syrup) lacked the expected flavour hit.

8) Don’t leave until you’ve tried the Kinder Surprise, housed in a chocolate dome (which alone had my chocolate stomach screaming for more). You’ll find milk chocolate and tonka whipped cream, caramelised hazelnuts, praline foam and sticky caramel pearls. It’s like delving into a treasure chest.

9) It needn’t be somewhere to round off your evening. Why have dessert after your meal when you can have a whole meal of desserts? That’s how life should be.

10) If you’re looking for a quiet night with your partner, come early in the week. At weekends, the bar is transformed by DJs and larger groups, where there’s more focus on cocktails than sweet bites.

"My Gulascheintopf war perfekt and so was the Weissbier. I was in Kingston Steins. I do have a few suggestions for decor and table. 1. you need a little jar of toothpicks on the table to get meat out from..." Which venue is this?
