The Green Room at The Curtain Hotel Review

Top 10 things to know about afternoon tea in The Green Room:

1) Think afternoon tea is a posh, formal affair? You’re wrong. The Curtain Hotel in trendy Shoreditch - neighbour to the ever-popular Queen of Hoxton bar and rooftop - is redefining how we take afternoon tea.

2) Enter the stylish hotel, breeze through the artsy reception and take a seat in The Green Room on the ground floor. The first thing you’ll notice is the bright, airy atmosphere thanks to its lofty ceiling. It’s so high, I’m pretty sure it can house the most towering of plants.

3) It’s called The Green Room for a reason: it brings the outdoors inside. Contemplate the plant paintings, the living foliage and other leafy plant life hanging around and above you as you sink back on the comfy banquette. The art on the walls was personally chosen by the American owners who hail from Harlem, NYC. I guess Harlem and Shoreditch aren’t so different from one another.

4) How is tea time different here from all other top afternoon teas in London? Well, uber chilled vibes, colourful pouffes, pendant lightings and casual but smartly dressed staff mean this once exclusively posh British experience is forgoing the formalities and instead taking a cool approach that’s accessible to everyone.

5) It’s afternoon tea with a hip twist. Rock up in jeans if you want, there are none of the pompous pretences here. The casual vibes are great for work meetings, mate meetups, and celebrations alike.

6) Expect the same high standard of service as you’d find at a variety of posh hotels in London. Marta and Chris, if you’re reading this, you’re both superstars. This is Shoreditch, so get chatty, get to know the people who run this place like clockwork - you'll soon realise it’s like talking to a friend.

7) I’m pretty sure this famous British export requires no introduction, and yet: a beautifully dressed table is ready to help you take on three tiers of appetising delights, from dainty finger sandwiches, to buttery scones, and an assortment of sweet treats to round off the afternoon’s proceedings.

8) Top marks for the classic presentation. I wish the gin and tonic cucumber sandwich bread could be a little softer, but that’s just my preference. The devilled eggs are scrumptiously smokey. The ham, cheese and mustard sandwiches are banging and the smoked salmon is fresh AF. Scones come warm and buttery. They say the best is often saved for last, and I can eat those zesty lemon meringue tarts for days.

9) How can we forget the teas? The Curtain Hotel looks after its community and collaborates with local tea experts Hackney Herbal to create eight blends especially for afternoon tea. That means there’s a tea to suit your taste whether spicy or floral. Choose Dream, a blend of peppermint and chamomile for a sense of serenity.

10) The Curtain is more than just a hotel. It’s also a restaurant and a private members club. Everyone and anyone can find American soul food at The Red Rooster restaurant, and lucky private members and hotel guests (damn!) have access to the private top floor rooftop restaurant and swimming pool....read more
