Rudie's Boxpark Review

Top 10 things to know about Rudie’s:

1) Tonight jerk chicken is calling. You want to burn your mouth with spice and then make it tingle with ginger beer.

2) Walking through the maze of Boxpark restaurants and bars near Shoreditch High Street on a Friday night, filled with revellers letting off steam after a long week at work, you find Rudie’s Caribbean restaurant fighting against the loud music. Inside its shipping container home, pleasing reggae music soothes your tired soul. You can’t have the island tranquillity in London, but at least you have the music to help.

3) Seating is very limited so you may need to sit against a wall if you haven’t arrived ahead of everyone else. It’s OK though; food is more important.

4) The menu is awash with authentic offerings such as rice and peas, jerk chicken, curry goat, fried plantain and, of course, patties. Jamaica’s renowned snack, the patty, sits looking fat and full of goodness. Thank God you arrived hungry because everything looks enticing!

5) You order a chicken and beef patty, the jerk chicken Jerk-It-Up box, sweet potato fries, jerk pork, calamari and hot wings. Your appetite increases as you spy giant steel drums, on which chicken is flame-grilled to the Jamaican high standard. You take a sip of your rum punch.

6) The food arrives a lot quicker than you expected, the waitress politely interrupting your heated conversation. Diving into the thick juicy pieces of calamari, you marvel at the sauce that sits on top, helping to lift the flavour of the seafood; a good way to start.

7) The jerk chicken is not as amazing as you’d hoped. The spices sit on the skin but don’t sink into the meat, making for a more plain taste as you continue. The fries are also on the ordinary side but the meal is saved by the patties which are as authentic as those you usually find in smaller, local Jamaican restaurants.

8) Your jerk pork is fatty, in a good way, and a better option than the chicken as the jerk seasoning and the fat work well together for a pleasurably greasy mouth-filler.

9) By time you finish, you’re full, relaxed, happy and feeling more alive; although not entirely mad with delight that you came.

10) The patrons, a mix of fresh students and tired workers, raise the atmosphere with laughter as you leave to journey on to another Shoreditch bar. Drinks on you.
