Monsieur M. Review

It’s all about the Feng Shui right? Peace, health, wealth and all that good stuff. The seductive velvety red painted walls gave me an instant sense of wellbeing, But alas! It was short lived. Something wasn’t quite right. Ah, I see, it was the high ceilings. I felt a little unbalanced, as though one foot was in hot water and the other in cold. Kind of like Picasso had taken me and stuck me in one of his cubism artworks.

So my sense of Feng Shui was a little tainted. The restaurant was bedecked in Buddhas and Bonsai, with chunky candles blushing, and then there was moi, perched at a table resembling bamboo and Ottoman seats, concentrating on the warmer aspect of my surroundings. So don’t get me twisted, it wasn’t all that bad. I was rosy, despite the ceilings, because my ear was attuned to the solo piano music. It certainly wasn’t a cacophony, but rather a tasteful choice.

Monsieur M. Is one of the newest establishments in Shoreditch. A name inspired by French colonised Vietnam as well as Mark, the owner. Mark this spot, that’s right, mark this restaurant as a must-be-seen. What impresses me most about Monsieur M is its unusual dish rotation. There are three main dishes to choose from which change day to day. This guarantees freshness of food, as well as the opportunity to sample various dishes at each visit.

The mains are accompanied with side dishes as well – my favourite the pepper prawns which looked to me like mummified prawns; as if they had been cooked in sleeping bags. Our pork and chicken dishes were Kung Fu Tastic and the seasonings were, as promised, fresh and poignant to the taste buds. The food was served in moon chair shaped bowls. Top that off with a J. Moreau red, and it was like a flavour catharsis.

My chopstick skills were put the challenge. Up till a few years ago, using them as glorified backscratchers was my main prerogative, and I was met with a dubious look when I challenged my date to a ‘sword’ fight. Hmmm, I was finally facing my lack of skill, and considering all, I did okay. So don’t worry. If I can do it, you most definitely can. I didn’t see why having a sword fight with my chopsticks was such a bad idea; after all, the place was busy with young families and student types looking for a quick and economic feed. There was a costume party in the private dining room. Heroes and sheroes were swanning about clad in their fairy wings and what have you. I looked at my date wryly. Tut tut.

The restaurant was showing a couple of signs of being at the toddler stage. The main one being the loooong wait we endured to be offered dessert. With only two choices on the dessert menu, and my stomach ever expanding, I knew I wouldn’t be able to do dessert and still enjoy one of Monsieur M’s signature smoothies with the respect it deserved. So a smoothie it was. One sip and I knew I had made the right choice.

By the time we finished, I was so full that I half expected an invitation to model as a live Buddha. But instead, I was the happy recipient of courteous smiles and farewells. I shrugged and doddered forth into the very non Feng Shui world.

“Discovered this place recently, having been invited there for a birthday party! Loved the food, very attentive service, great value for money! The bar being the centre piece of the restaurant gives it a great feeling. They also do amazing cocktails, which at £6.00 are a bargain. Like the fact that they kept some of the old features of the victorian building, such as the original handwash basins in the toilets. Will definitely be back for more!”

“This is a really great place. It comes across to me though, that it is an investor's restaurant as opposed to a vision come true. That's just the feeling i got. The toilets were really really old fashioned, and had those old chains to pull. It was a bit weird, which to me was indicative of it being an investor's business. I cannot fault the food. The food was really really excellent and spicy and fresh. The bar is in the 'heart' of the restaurant which is nice, and there is even a place to hang coats it seems. Yeah, overall i enjoyed it.”
