Kinkao Review

Kinkao is featured in these Guides:

Top 10 things we learnt about Kinkao restaurant:

1) Searching for places to eat on Brick Lane often carries a hint of Russian roulette – the hit and miss cuisine is compounded by pushy restaurateurs, loutish parties and undignified haggling matches taking place on every corner. Not so with Kinkao.

2) Situated to the north of the main drag by the Shoreditch High Street Overground train line, this Thai restaurant is far removed from the unsavoury hubbub; except at weekends, when the Brick Lane market sets up shop on its doorstep.

3) The restaurant’s withdrawn yet convenient location filters down to its clientele, who are generally young, bubbly and friendly, reflecting the area’s diversity and that ineffable Brick Lane aura. If anything, the venue’s serenity can seem rather eerie compared to the free-for-all taking place just down the road.

4) Inside, the décor is fairly restrained, although there is still room for an ornate gold model of a Thai longboat in the front window. And why not indeed?

5) Intricate wooden tables, virtuoso carvings, tasteful shades and dim lighting add to the pleasantly offbeat feel of the venue, with muffled background music creating the ambience.

6) Service is measured, efficient and informative; turnaround at lunch and dinner is brisk but, crucially, divested of the usual pushiness that is typical of nearby curry houses.

7) And that’s before we even get started on the food, which is tasty, authentic and in bountiful supply. All for a reasonable price, too - particularly the Thai Lunchbox, which packs a hefty main course with rice for just £5.95; yes, £5.95!

8) Starters, soups and light salads would all fit the bill for those looking for a quick bite, and lead into a plethora of curries, wok-based concoctions, and grilled and fried meat dishes, with lashings of scented rice and noodles. Try the Kaeng Ped Ped Yang curry, with duck breast, cherry tomatoes and pineapple - accompanied with egg-fried jasmine rice, it is truly a meal to Thai for.

9) Meanwhile, the drinks menu comes across as somewhat functional, but manages to complement the menu to a tee, with a host of beers, spirits and wines available for consumption from the large main bar.

10) All told, Kinkao is a comfortable, hassle-free haven for tasty, authentic fare, located on the hallowed turf of Brick Lane but without the usual headaches associated with it.
