Bill's Review

Top 10 things we discovered about Bill’s restaurant when we visited:

1) I declare that I’m a Bill’s virgin. Bill has never had his way with me and I not with him. And so, at this first point of contact: Hoxton Square; Shoreditch; cast iron cages; exposed brickwork; sauces for sale; low hanging chandeliers and gargantuan bouquets of chillies; romantic candelabra; organic smoothies and Sam Adam’s beer; funky disco music; and dinner lady dishcloth napkins. The look of it was shouting wheatgrass, tofu and yoga. Surely it’s a one-off independent restaurant?

2) That’d be a no. Three years ago there were two Bill’s restaurants. Now, there are 27 restaurants. Uh-oh, did we accidentally book a meal at a chain restaurant?

3) It’s easy to knock chain restaurants and their bowl-in-a-bag, 2-for-1 voucher approach, but this particularly groovy restaurant in this particular groovy part of London definitely doesn’t belong in the same doggy bag as Cafe Rouge, Strada, Pizza Express, or any of that Wagamama rubbish.

4) Think Shadow of the Mighty Wahaca and you’re reading the right vibe.

5) As you’d expect, the menu is that industrial-sized, double sided sheet of cardboard which is updated every three months, with a mini specials menu (overkill) created every three weeks.

6) There are no surprises on the menu - typical British comfort food, reasonably priced - and yet, like a special Christmas school dinner, the pots and pies provide ample stodge. By ‘eck.

7) The lemon squid starter wasn’t remarkably pretty, but my goodness (!), combined with a glass of Le Duc viognier wine, it was possibly the best starter I’ve ever eaten. I almost ordered it twice.

8) A word of warning: the slow cooked BBQ ribs are dauntingly colossal and your guest must prepare to (a) dish out the chit-chat whilst you, (b) gleefully make a right mess.

9) It’s clearly a popular restaurant. The sexy price point, desirable location, customary cuisine, perky service and cocktail of rustic-industrial New York warehouse design bear much veneration.

10) Bill’s is not breaking any boundaries for menu inventiveness. This is geography that has already been mapped, and even though there is a contrast between the way it looks and the way the menu is executed, you probably wouldn’t find duck pie or chorizo Scotch egg at TGI Friday’s, thus making this one of the best chain restaurants in London, I’d say.

“We gave ordered fish and duck pie . Both pies we're at least 70% potato and not very tasty . The waiter kindly offered us a free drink but I do not suggest anyone try their pie . The olive we ordered was from a cheap olive you buy in Aldi type , taste less . Don't fall for the atmosphere”
