The Real Greek Review

Book a table at The Real Greek

Best for: awful Greek wine; dieters that want to see how many calories are in the desserts; amazing flatbread with olive oil and dukkah.

Great: lamb cutlets; cheap eat while shopping; chicken souvlaki.

Liver, Brussels sprouts and bacon casserole. Let me just repeat that. Liver, Brussels sprouts and bacon casserole. That was what was being whipped up in an unsuspecting kitchen in Wood Green. Luckily, the simple act of picking up the phone, dialing my friend’s number and inviting her out for dinner meant Blonde Karen was spared a night of her boyfriend’s weird (it should be illegal, frankly) culinary taste.

Alas, there was no simple act to spare her the smelly horror that would greet her when she got back home (what am I, a fairy godmother?). So what far, far superior meal were we dining on instead? We were going west. A steamy, rainy terrace with palm trees and a water feature on one side and clean and shiny restaurants on the other. It made me think of Singapore, but no, we were west, not east. Westfield, to be precise.

And we were walking into a Greek restaurant. This was no fake or mythical restaurant, this was the REAL GREEK.

Did the halloumi squeak? Tick. Was the aubergine smoky? Yes. Was there lots of lamb on the menu? Correct. Could you quite happily dine on just bread and dips? Positive. Did the Greek wine taste like something normally found in a toilet? Affirmative!

Unfortunately, the rain outside, some un-Greek twists, and a few culinary let-downs meant we never got so confused that we thought we were in the REAL GREECE.

We enjoyed some of the un-Greek bits. The meze was served on stands that you’d normally see fajitas or afternoon tea stacked on, and the restaurant was modern and airy with a brilliant light bulb design installation.

All the dishes were Greek; REAL GREEK is debatable though. The lamb cutlets were tender and juicy, and the chicken souvlaki had great flavours wrapped up in a crispy flatbread. But there were a few disappointments. The aubergine was watery and too garlicky, the beef pasty was stodgy, and the lemon cake too dense.

The white wine from Crete, the second cheapest, was just bizarre. It tasted of ginger and we swore it was a magic self-filling wine (maybe I am a fairy godmother. Although, I’d rather magic up Chablis or Sancerre). No, we were just such slow drinkers of this weird wine that it took an age to get to the end. Actually, we never reached the end. A first for Ruth and Blonde Karen.

I also don’t think any Greek restaurant would reveal the number of calories of each dessert on its menu, a feature that made us squirm in horror. 685 calories for the ice-cream sundae!!

The small horrors and disappointments aside, we concluded that this was still far, far superior to a liver and sprout casserole. However, despite the Pizza Express prices (so we were hardly expecting Michelin-starred fine dining), this is not to Greek food what Pizza Express is to Italian food. It just hasn’t quite got there yet. There are better, similarly priced, Greek restaurants in London that do a better taboulleh, a better aubergine dip, and more authentic savoury pastry dishes.

I wouldn’t say we won’t go back to any Real Greek restaurant (there are six in London), but we’d definitely order a safer French or Kiwi wine if we did. And for an inexpensive lunchtime snack, the souvlaki is great.

But if we’re in Westfield again, trying to get as far away as possible from the liver and sprout fumes of Wood Green, I think we’ll give Wahaca or Jamie’s Italian a whirl instead.
