The Coach and Horses Review

Best for: south west London catch ups.

Great: way to support a local establishment.

“Darling, where shall we go for lunch today? Saskia and Thompson are coming over with Henry, Bobett and Samson. You know little Henry is nine now. I couldn’t believe it when I got the invitation to the sushi making party.”

“What about the Coach and Horses, my love? The place down the road that’s part hotel, part pub and part restaurant? The one that had huge refurbishment earlier this year. We could go for a Sunday roast?”

“What a splendid idea my sweet. That kind of thinking is the reason I married you; that, and your beautiful house in Richmond, of course. Coach and Horses? Isn’t that the place where kids are welcome? And doesn’t the food suit practically everyone? I seem to recall enjoying a glass or two of wine there a few times too. I believe I went there for a drink with the girls last week actually. It works rather well as a pub if you don’t want to eat. It’s rather large too, so hopefully we can get a table.”

“But will Saskia like it? You know she has very exacting taste.”

“I don’t see why she wouldn’t. All that stained wood in the shape of trees, and rather cute furnishing - like those teapots and tea cups on the shelves - and random paintings of ducks. She loves that sort of thing. Did you hear about the bill she ran up in Laura Ashley last week? Margie told me Thompson almost cut off her credit card.”

“Will there be something for Bobett to eat? You know he isn’t eating meat at the moment, after that school project about where beef bourguignon comes from.”

“Darling, of course. There’ll be a veggie roast option. Samantha had it last time. There was a rather good cheese board that came after it as well, so I’m positive we can find something to fill him up, the little scamp. I think I’ll get the roast lamb. I had it last time and it was most enjoyable, particularly with the crab apple jelly. I do like a nice condiment and oh, the crème brulee darling. Nothing beats the crack of a proper crème brulee. Splendid portions as well.”

“You’re sure you want dessert as well, sugarplum? Remember we’re both losing half a stone before Sardinia with the Stanfords this year.”

“We’ll order the quinoa salad to make up for it then. Plus, my dear, you know you don’t have to lose any weight, your still as gorgeous as the first day I met you.”

"That’s sweet of you to say but I know it’s complete lie and I wasn’t just talking about myself."

“All right, I’ll order wine instead of beer and have a salad starter instead of dessert. Had sticky pork salad last time; rather tasty. Do you know if there’s anything on there today? Remember a while ago we went and they had someone playing the piano.”

“I don’t know, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

“Well that’s settled then, I’ll call Saskia and tell her to meet us there. Would you go put the kettle on, I could murder a Lapsang Souchong.”

Customer Reviews for The Coach and Horses

Average (based on 1 votes): 1 Atmosphere: Value: Quality:

“Reasonable food, as might be expected from near-Kew, made all the more reasonable by the view from the 'library' room and main bar across the green. Unfortunately the rear is a little claustrophobic, despite appeals to pastoral wall papers, and the price leaves little room too. Still, a 'lovely place for a Sunday lunch', as they say.”
