The Bingham Bar Review

The Bingham Bar is featured in these Guides:

Best for: sipping decadent cocktails on the sun terrace whilst thinking about the rough end of town up north.

Great: cocktail and wine list; views across the Thames.

Here’s a lesson I learnt the hard way: when one is asked to review the swanky bar of a (former Michelin-starred) restaurant-cum-boutique-hotel – where you will be plied with sumptuous cocktails – don’t turn up looking like you stayed up until 3am drinking JD & Coke and playing Johnny Cash on the juke box of a divey biker bar in Holloway. Or in my case, don’t turn up having actually stayed up until 3am drinking JD & Coke and playing Johnny Cash on the juke box drinking in a divey biker bar in Holloway.

Upon our arrival at the aforementioned bar – The Bingham in the leafy London suburb of Richmond – my other half and I were slightly terrified, glancing down at our shabby-chic, east London media-world clothing (there's a time and a place for a onesie and denim jacket, and cocktail hour at the Bingham ain't one of them).

Nestled in a gorgeous hotel in a glorious Georgian building, The Bingham has a coming-of-age feel to it; as though it's somewhere one might be taken for a graduation dinner once you've finished your LLB from BPP and are set to join the magic-circle firm of your (father's) choice.

To give you a bit of background about the building in which The Bingham is housed: Lady Anne Bingham, who was in fact related to the Lucans, including the infamous, conspiracy theorists favourite, Lord 'Lucky' Lucan (known as Lord Bingham prior to 1964), lived here in 1821.

Furthermore, the Binghams are related to the Spencers. Yes THE Spencers; Lady Bingham's sister Lavinia married Earl Spencer, brother to Lady Di (another figure popular with conspiracy theorists).

So, dear reader, I hope you appreciate that I’m not being blasé by saying that my partner and I felt slightly as though we didn't belong here (we didn't). Now, we are no means from the wrong side of the tracks (debatable I suppose, he's Australian and I'm from Glasgow) but when we walked into The Bingham – looking a little bit more ASBO and a little less SATC – we felt slightly intimidated, but were immediately put as ease by the friendly, welcoming, and, importantly, non-judgmental staff.

And from herein the evening only got better. With perfect river views, my partner and I spent a warm summer's evening on the hotel bar's leafy terrace (complete with heaters for chilly evenings) sipping elegant cocktails. You can’t do this in Holloway.

Aesthetics aside, the cocktails are indeed the main pull here (they offer a seasonally changing menu as well as old favourites, classics and signature drinks), but the wine and spirit lists are both long and impressive, and the staff really know their stuff.

The Bingham also offers elegant fine dining, so once suitably tipsy on scrummy cocktails, patrons can choose to either meander back towards town, take a stroll along the river, or perhaps move through to the decadent – all high ceilings and Art Deco interiors – dining room for some top-notch (3 AA Rosettes, don't cha know) grub.

Simply spiffing.

‘Til next time, tally ho old chaps.
