Valentina Fine Foods Putney Review

“Do you know who I am?!” Wouldn’t we all love the power to say that someday and have it actually mean something. I was just a little bit miffed on arrival, even after I had presented my card, that nobody actually knew I was coming. So the night began with a great game of phone tag - I wonder if regular bookings get lost in ether like this? - and after all that tagging (and yes it does count as exercise), feeling puffed and out of breath, we were finally seated.

Not only that, but my stomach was about to eat itself. Luckily it was distracted for a moment by the interesting décor: old family photos, no doubt of the legacy of Valentina dating back three generations. A bit of a history buff myself, I found it fascinating.

It was puzzling to me why we were seated downstairs near the delicatessen, though. After toddling up to the ladies I felt jealous of all the customers upstairs. The heart of the restaurant is up there, and, really, the downstairs tables seem to be space fillers. Not to mention the steady stream of distracting customers who wander in and out close by, buying authentic Italian ingredients for their evening meal.

There are views to be had: a lounge, a bar, and intimate little corners. Also, al fresco will be a beautiful option for the summer months. It’s no surprise that most customers were upstairs; leggy blondes wearing short skirts (or are they just long tops?) and equally gorgeous guys who’d probably say something like “don’t touch the hair!” if anyone entered their personal space.

Myself and Italian food have a bit of a love-hate relationship. If I’m impressed and happy, the quality must be good. Similarly, vice versa. Valentina is unique in the sense that instead of the starter-main process, it serves ‘Spuntinos’; essentially, Italian tapas. I love variety, and one can never be accused of sticking one’s fingers in too many pies. With this in mind, we ordered.

When I chose the Tuscan sausages, the waiter accused me of not ordering something ‘really Italian’. He insisted I try the stew of fine peas and Sicilian cherry tomatoes, even though I clearly said I didn’t like peas or stew. I opted for both and was glad I did. The pea stew was stew (aptly rhymes with…), but the sausages I loved. I still feel like I want to be chewing them now. Mmmmm, they were cooked just the way I like; spicy and scrumptious. The prawns were a little pale for my liking, though, and had a bitter bite.

I’m a great fan of salami and found the antipasto classico to be droolingly delicious. My friend had ear pasta with fresh basil after her delicious vegetarian antipasto. The mussels in tomato and white wine sauce are worth a mention, too, as even my veggie pal loved them. The white wine we were served went down a treat, and I swear the flavours were so subtle I could have sung an Italian aria without my usual warm up... lalalalalaaa.....! It was only a taste of the 165 authentic Italian wines on the menu. So plenty to tickle the vocals.

Dessert was creative; tiramisu served in a coffee cup. I was almost fooled into picking it up and taking a sip. At least my reflexes are in tune. I suppose the tiramisu was making me somewhat happy. A sweet sensation, but not sweet enough!

The staff were very hospitable; our waiter was met with my best Homer Simpson expression when he nonchalantly came over and spoke in Italian. What? I’m African. When we were growing up there was no such thing as foreign European language at school. Nonetheless, he shot me a wry smile and we embarked on some chitter chatter about this and that (in English). You know, the usual. If I ever learn to speak Italian fluently, I want an accent like thaa’ttt’.

Our evening was coming to its finale. The light was starting to fade, and the olive trees outside were becoming a faded outline. They say the show aint over till the Fat Lady sings... well, I can pleasingly say, having thought my night’s feast through, my love-hate relationship with Italian food was now converted to a love relationship – exclusive to Valentina that is. Yes, after all that eating (and willingly so), tonight, I was the fat lady, but no, I didn’t sing; since this show is just too good to stop. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t the star of the show, and that no one knew who I was.

Valentina – a pleasing experience, scrumptious bites, well-priced, and with their unique ‘spuntino’ tapas style, a fun dining experience.

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
