King's Head - Roehampton - Youngs Review

Best for: Organic chicken and Young’s Ales.

Great: Easy evening out with friends and family in a chic retreat.

“Oh, Oh, Oh” Christmas has just passed and we are walking around miserably, looking for another merry occasion, to drink and eat with no guilt.

I drove the streets of London - “Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells” – during the craziest days of spending. Weren’t we in a recession?! We ran up and down making sure the 25th of December was a triumph of waste, family fights and secrets drunkenly revealed.

Usually, after a Christmas shopping evening, I am always in search of a nice hideaway: comfy, familiar, but chic, where I can relax. Now that I think of it, I’m always in search of somewhere to relax: after work, before work, lunch, dinner, after a stressful meeting, after a gym session, to meet my girlfriends who need advice, to escape my kids and boyfriend, to reconnect with my kids and boyfriend.

Let’s turn in by Roehampton High Street, where I see a nice building lit to perfection, evoking a somewhat colonial aura.

Inside, the ambience is delightful: leather and wooden chairs, “Arte Povera” tables, lovely couches and shelves filled with real books. There are various rooms, a big desk covered with eye-catching food and drinks, the traditional pub stand on the right. I am not even put off by various people wearing paper Christmas hats. The Christmas soundtrack should yell “Let it snow! Let it snow!” because this would be the perfect place if it did.

For a moment I’m lost in my thoughts about paper hats. I am awakened by a cheerful waiter, presenting me with the menu and wine list. He is very enthusiastic and pinpoints the fact that the pub is well known for its organic chicken. Let’s go with a chicken based menu then, and how about a nice pint of Young’s to accompany it.

I drink my pint, eat my chicken terrine and beer bread with oil and vinegar, whilst the lights in the main foyer are “turned way down low”.

Again, I am lost in my thoughts; this time about eating birds: why do we eat turkey at Christmas? Maybe, because we’re influenced by the Americans? Or because turkey is cheap and big, hence feeds many people at once? Now that I think of it, in Italy we actually eat lamb. Why do we eat lamb for Christmas in Italy, and turkey in England? I do love the stuffing.

Once again I am awoken, this time by my perfect venison shepherd’s pie and a succulent cheeseburger and gherkin, served with beer onions and bloody Mary relish.

The landlady comes to our table and tells us the tale of this renewed pub. We talk about how she will spend her Christmas: for a moment I envy her, a whole pub for herself during the holiday season. Just magic!

The words of yet another Christmas song come to my mind: “When we finally kiss goodnight, how I'll hate going out in the storm!” Peeping out of the window, it seems quite cold outside and I don’t want to go. I am comforted by dessert: clotted cream and rice pudding.

Dessert, glorious dessert. I guess this is the only reason why we really love the holidays. The amount of chocolate I’ve eaten this year would require the rebuilding of at least three more Bournville villages.

Once again my mind wanders: do I prefer milk or fondant chocolate? Why do we eat more chocolate during Christmas? Is orange chocolate traditional in England or Belgium? In the end, I do really prefer Panettone. Oh, my. I will have to join the gym, again, and run at least one mile every morning, to shed the accumulated pounds.

It’s time to return home. Beforehand, though, I hang by the bar and then in a lovely enclave, where a table and sofa would normally wait for a family gathering or an intimate encounter. There is a spirit of joyful jamboree around me, and I feel like coming back for more, only next time inviting all my friends.

I’ve found yet another great refuge. Valentine is on the horizon. Should I invite my boyfriend here or, maybe, my desperate friends trying to escape yet another dreaded holiday?!
