B@1 (Be At One) Review

Best for: Cocktails with all the trimmings; and lots of cocktails with the letter ‘z’ in (English Fizz, Aperol Spritz, Swizzle, Sazerac…)

Great: high spirits and a huge sense of community.

I have come to the conclusion that cocktails are very much like models. They both possess another worldly (almost alienesque) beauty about them. They can be fresh and fruity like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, spicy like Gisele Bundchen, aromatic like Lara Stone, or have a kick to them like Naomi Campbell. Both models and cocktails come in all shapes and sizes and both can determine the fashion and popularity of the time, from what colour to wear, to what spirit to drink (FYI: pastels are in and so is gin).

My thoughts of comparing cocktails and models is becoming ever more apparent to me every day. My day job involves meeting various girls who come in for a casting while my evening role is dominated by scouting out the latest concoctions being served in the best bars and clubs around London. I like both jobs equally, although my feet are starting to kill wearing seven inch platform heels morning, noon and night to elevate my 5’0” self. You’d understand if you had to stand with 6ft leggy blondes and compete to be seen in the bar on a Friday night.

I find myself constantly defending models and cocktails too. To those who hate one or the other (or both; these people generally hate everything), I’m always saying that they aren’t all the same. They cater to different tastes. They can all be appreciated in their own ways. And if you don’t like one you might like another. You might not like Kate Moss or a Dark & Stormy, but you might like Agyness Deyn and a Sloe Gin Fizz. I can only advise you to look through a fashion magazine and find a model that doesn’t make you want to push her off the catwalk.

And for cocktails? The research begins at B@1 bar.

More specifically, the B@1 bar in Putney. I’ve only ever been to the Putney branch (in total there are 12 B@1 bars) but I’ve been told that the others are great too. My night at the Putney B@1 bar was one of brilliance (the bar staff), perfection (the cocktails), and wonder (the very weird and not so wonderful guy named Kamil who claimed to be part of British Royalty and then later on a spider!).

What do the current top model and the top cocktail at B@1 have in common? They’re both called Arizona. Arizona Muse is the girl of the season and has the campaigns, editorials and covers to prove it. The Arizona Cooler is made from Beefeater gin, cranberry juice and a float of grapefruit juice. It’s fresh and sweet, just like Ms Muse. In fact, the other top cocktails on the list also possess the letter ‘z’: Sloe Gin Fizz; Sea Breeze (Absolut Vodka based); Zombie (Mount Gay and Gosling’s rums); and Sazerac (Bulleit bourbon). All of these are delicious so my advice: stick with the Zs.

Russia: home of the Czar, Faberge and Rasputin. It’s also the country that supermodel Natalia Vodianova calls home. When the Russians do something they do it with a mighty force. Take the Black Russian, for example, which contains vodka, Kahlua and is served on jagged rocks. Even the creamier more drinkable White Russian packs a punch. Then there’s the spicy Moscow Mule that’s a vodka based potion topped with ginger beer. It’ll fire up your taste buds for sure.

For those of you who are more traditional, the Long Island Iced Tea is a treat. Like Kate Moss, this cocktail has stood the test of time. There are many variations on both. The Japanese Iced Tea has Midori Melon and lemonade while the Beverley Hills is rather decadently topped with Mumm Champagne. Whilst I get excited seeing Cara Delevigne modelling for all the top designers and could be persuaded to make Edie Campbell my model of the moment, Kate is the queen and always will be for as long as she keeps rolling down that runway.

Every bar has its signature drink. B@1 bar has several but the one I’m going to mention is the one I had a double serving of. Like my ultimate model, Karen Elson, this cocktail is well and truly orange. Elson’s Botticelli fiery coloured curls are just as gorgeous as the Breakfast Martini. Beefeater 24 gin, Cointreau and fresh lemon juice shaken with a spoonful of marmalade. Like Elson, all this drink needs is time to grow in stature and become an iconic, unique and absolutely essential drink in the cocktail world.

You can go to any of the B@1 bars to sample any of these delightful cocktails but alas, you’re unlikely to find the models there too (sorry boys). However, at the Putney branch you will encounter the smiles and shaker skills of Barney, Noel, Alex and Shay. And if you’re REALLY lucky, you’ll meet HRH Kamil who’s part arachnid, apparently.

“Love this bar! We head over there on a Friday night We get there early around 7:30/8 to grab a seat at the back of the bar. By 9 the place is packed. Get a group of you all together and order different cocktails. That way you get to sample a fair few (depending how many of you there are and how many rounds you do!)”

"My Gulascheintopf war perfekt and so was the Weissbier. I was in Kingston Steins. I do have a few suggestions for decor and table. 1. you need a little jar of toothpicks on the table to get meat out from..." Which venue is this?
