The Sun & Doves Review

Sod football. We weren’t going to win it anyway since our flag isn’t 3 vertical, coloured stripes – it seems that’s all you need to get your team to the final these days. That and a few adjudicators from the Refereeing School for the Blind.

Fear not though my sullen-faced comrades, for we can mend our football-shaped broken hearts. All we need do is unify in the name of entertainment. Take a peak out of your window and you’ll see skips full of entertainment just lying about, waiting to be taken advantage of. London has an entertainment surplus mountain and not a scrap of it involves ‘having a go’ at some Portuguese – with the exception of Nandos Peri-Peri chicken, of course.

Therefore, let us now rise up and socialise in places that bringeth the joy: Northcote Road in Clapham Junction; Upper Street in Angel; Coldharbour Lane in Camberwell.

‘Coldharbour Lane in Camberwell’, did you say?

That’s correct, you heard me rightly. Your destiny is already written. In the not-too-distant future you shall be meeting your friends for coffee outside Camberwell tube station.

But Camberwell doesn’t have a tube station!

Ah, this much is true but (and this is a J-Lo-sized ‘but’) Camberwell will have a tube station one day when it transcends all logical thinking and becomes a thriving mini-opolis of fashion boutiques and specialist cheese shops. And all because it had The Sun & Doves….and maybe Nandos aswell.

The Sun & Doves is your forward-thinking, socially-conscious friend. It uses low energy light bulbs and Fair Trade coffee; it’s looking to install two wind power generators; and it once even applied for a grant to become the world’s first Carbon Neutral pub.

The Sun & Doves is also your arts-loving friend. It has continual displays from artisans such as Anish Kapoor and being friend to a record label means that it promotes live music on Sundays.

The Sun & Doves is also your outdoors-loving friend. It is infested with beer gardens. The street-facing benches are prime for spotting the #37 bus at close range whereas, for the lesser-spotted socialites, the sun really shines out of the rear.

The Sun & Doves is also your food-loving friend. Its menu is pubescent; its specialities are water-domiciled; its weekends are BBQ’d; and its nachos are ‘killer’, allegedly.

The Sun & Doves is also your booze-hound friend. It prides itself with a variety of premium and lesser-known spirits, thus ensuring Oliver Reed-strength cocktails (unfortunately for us all though, the beer selection is restricted under contract and sadly displays nothing more adventurous than Kronenberg).

And resisting the temptation to make a joke about ugly people, The Sun & Doves is your animal-loving friend too because it even barks a ‘dogs are welcome’ policy.

Tis’ no wonder that it was, therefore, runner-up in the the 1998 Evening Standard ‘Pub of the Year’ competition.

Hmmm, high-spirited, interested in the arts, concerned about the environment and fair trade, perculiar foods, located in the middle of Arsing Nowhere - could this be the urban Glastonbury? Well, all the participants do seem to be getting along quite swimmingly.

Camberwellandtruly. Otherwise 8 out of 10

“Still one of the best gardens around but I have to say the quality of food has recently been pretty terrible and I don't eat here any more. Quite expensive.”

“This place has one of the nicest bar gardens around. Easily one of the best place for drinking on a summer's afternoon; the food is pretty reasonable too. The coldharbour lane factor keeps the idiots at bay so the place is a little like the Sun in Clapham, only nicer and less congested. I wish they'd say no to some of the artwork though. I am a little left-field with my taste in art.”

“In an area that is increasingly becoming overrun by 'fashionable' bars, the sun and doves remains a real haven in Camberwell. The food is excellent, the staff friendly, the cocktails amazing. At the moment there is some inspired art on the walls, and the music's always good. A real gem.”

“They have really nice wines and good cocktails, the caiphirinia (is that how you spell it?) is brilliant. The food is delicious and, I think, really good value.”

“We''ve been here for eight years, doing good food drink and art. We were, honest, just about the first ''modern'' bar in south London. People said we''d brought the west end south of the river. Award: 1996 nominated for Time Out London ''Bar of The Year''. 1998 Evening Standard ''Pub of the Year'' runner-up. 1999 First entry to Good Food guide. 2002 ''Best for Kids'' south of the river Living South Magazine. 2003 ''Best for Kids'' south of the river Living South Magazine. We''ve had over 300 artists in exhibitions”
